The Dewar Dragon varsity basketball team earned a runner-up finish at the 2022 Wilson Tiger Classic this past Saturday, falling by an 82-20 margin to Riverfield Day Country Day School in the tournamentâs championship game.
The Dewar Dragon varsity basketball team earned a runner-up finish at the 2022 Wilson Tiger Classic this past Saturday, falling by an 82-20 margin to Riverfield Day Country Day School in the tournament’s championship game.
The Dragons found their way into the title game of the week-long event by defeating the Maud Tigers by a 46-41 margin in the winner’s bracket semifinal round last Thursday evening.
The Dewar gentlemen were back in action Tuesday with a trip to Mason and will close out their first-half schedule Thursday at Wetumka.
In last Thursday’s semifinal win over Maud, the Dragons trailed 13-8 after the first eight minutes of action, then took the second stanza by a 12-4 margin to lead by three, 20-17, at the halftime break.
The Dewar squad doubled their lead, 35-31, heading into the final frame after a narrow 15-12 advantage in the third quarter.
Maud attempted to take over the lead in the fourth period, putting up 12 points in the stanza.
The Dragons countered with 11 points in the final eight minutes of action to advance to the tournament title game with the hard-fought 46-41 semifinal victory.
John Rex was tops offensively for Dewar in the win with 16 points. Ishmael Stewart also finished with double-digit scoring for the Dragons against Maud with 10 points.
Jeron Brison just missed double figures with nine, while the remaining scorers for Dewar were Tryton Mack with six, Cole Miller three, and Skelly Taylor two.
In Saturday’s title contest, the Dragons struggled offensively against Riverfield, putting up point totals of five, eight, five, and two, respectively in the 4-quarter battle.
Riverfield countered with point totals of 28, 13, 27, and 14, respectively, to hand the Dewar cage squad the 8220 defeat.
Ishmael Stewart led the Dragon scorers with seven points, followed by John Rex with five, Jeron Brison four, and Tryton Mack and Bryce Caldwell two each.
