Lady Dogs drop home opener to Haskell
By Henryetta Free Lance CMS,

The Okmulgee Lady Bulldog varsity basketball team began the home portion of their regular-season schedule Tuesday evening.

The Okmulgee Lady Bulldog varsity basketball team began the home portion of their regular-season schedule Tuesday evening.

The first visitor to historic Brock Memorial Gymnasium in 2022-2023 was the Haskell Lady Haymakers.

The home opener did not go in the direction of the host Lady Bulldogs, as the Okmulgee squad found themselves on the losing end of a 64-41 outcome.

The Okmulgee ladies were back in action Thursday evening with a firstround showdown with the Warner Lady Eagles at the 2022 Preston Invitational Basketball Tournament.

A win over Warner on Thursday will put the Lady Bulldogs into the winner’s bracket semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. against the winner of a firstround battle between Rejoice Christian and the tournament host Preston Lady Pirates. A loss to Warner will drop the Okmulgee cage squad into a consolation semifinal game Friday at 1 p.m. against the Preston-Rejoice Christian loser.

After the conclusion of the Preston Tournament, the Lady Bulldogs will return to the hardwood next Thursday at home against the Morris Lady Eagles and will be on the road next Friday, traveling to Idabel for a showdown with the Idabel Lady Warriors.

Both of next week’s contests are scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m.

In Tuesday’s home opener against Haskell, the Okmulgee squad came out of the opening frame with a narrow 13-12 advantage. The visitors took the second stanza by a 19-7 margin to send the contest to the halftime break with the Lady Bulldogs trailing by 11 points, 31-20.

The Okmulgee ladies were unable to overcome the double-digit halftime deficit in the second half, as the visitors took the final two frames 19-12 and 14-9, respectively, to put the Lady Bulldogs on the short end of a 64-41 outcome.

Three Okmulgee players reached double figures in the home opener, led by Jaidyn Gatewood with a team-best 14 points. Other Lady Bulldog double- digit scorers against Haskell were Mariya Tecumseh with 11 and Tori James with 10.

Cora Cremin-Love rounded out the Okmulgee scoring with six points.

--- Haskell 64, Okmulgee 41
