Dewar, Schulter split county battle

Both Okmulgee County cage squads came away from the hardwood showdown with a victory.

The Schulter Lady Bulldogs took the opening contest by a 46-40 decision for their second win of the season, while the host Dewar Dragons came out of the nightcap with a 71-31 victory to open their 2022-2023 season on a winning note.

Both county schools were in action this week at the annual Wilson Tiger Classic basketball tournament.

In last Friday’s girls county battle, the visitors took the opening period by a 13-9 margin, then the host Lady Dragons went into the halftime break in front by three, 22-19, after outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 13-6 in the second quarter.

The Schulter ladies regained the lead, 30-29, with one quarter remaining following an 11-7 advantage in the third stanza.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs capped off the six-point win by edging the host Lady Dragons 16-11 in the final period to walk away with the 46-40 decision.

Payton Campbell was the top scorer for the Schulter ladies with 13 points, followed by Jenna Henderson and Macee Henderson with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Addiemae Kanada was next for the Lady Bulldogs with seven, while Caidence Campbell rounded out the Schulter scoring with five points.

In last Friday’s boys county battle, the host Dragons led 15-11 after the first eight minutes of action, then outscored the visiting Bulldogs 25-4 in the second frame for a 40-15 halftime advantage.

The Dewar squad closed out the season- opening win by taking the final two periods by margins of 15-7 and 16-9, respectively, to walk away with the 71-31 decision.

The Dragons were led offensively by Tryton Mack with 15, followed by Skelly Taylor with 12. Other Dewar scorers in the county contest were John Rex and Ishmael Stewart with eight each, Kyler Hartsford and Seth Hudson seven apiece, Cole Miller four, Ben Atoigue three, Blake Silkwood, Sam Fowler, and Bryce Caldwell two each, and Jacob Finley one.

Schulter was led in the scoring column by Bobby Calhoun with 10 points. Kris Thompson and Isaiah Bauer were next for the Bulldogs with four points each, followed by Willie Corn with three, Kenta Carder, Jordan Horne, Colton Nuckolls, and Nick Tucker two apiece, and Bradyn Brown and Nick Henderson one each.
