Missed Opportunity
By Larry Owen,

Demons’ state title dreams dashed with second round loss

For the first time since 2016, the Beggs Golden Demon varsity footbal team has failed to reach - at least - the quarterfinal round of the state football playoffs.

The Demons’ bid for ending their state championship drought extended for another season following a 24-12 loss to the Idabel Warriors this past Friday night in the Class 2A state playoffs at Tate Field at Golden Demon Stadium.

The double-digit setback ends Beggs’ 2022 campaign at 7-5, which included a fourth-place finish in 2A-7 and an upset win over second-ranked Rejoice Christian in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs on November 11.

In last Friday’s second-round battle in Beggs, the Demons opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 56yard TD run by University of Kansas commit Red Martel. The try for two was unsuccessful to give Beggs an early 6-0 advantage.

Later in the first quarter, the visitors knotted the score at 6-6 on a 23yard pass from Waylon Phillips to A.J. Smith.

Idabel took over the lead, 12-6, at halftime following a 1-yard TD run by Phillips on a QB keeper.

The visitors extended its lead to 24-6 with a pair of 1-yard TD runs by Ravian Larry.

The first short-yardage score came in the third quarter, while the second score occurred in the final 12 minutes of regulation.

The Demons were unable to overcome the huge deficit, tallying just one score in the final frame - a 42-yard aerial strike from Knox Dyson to Ryan Grayson, bringing the Beggs gridiron squad’s state title hopes to a close with the 24-12 setback.
