The Beggs Golden Demons saw their chances of playing a first-round playoff game in front of their home fans disappear last Thursday with a 35-18 loss to the visiting Sperry Pirates.

The 17-point setback came in the regular-season finale for both teams at Tate Field at Golden Demon Stadium in Beggs.

The regular-season finale loss puts the Demons fourth overall in the District 2A-7 standings, which means a road game in the first round of the Class 2A state football playoffs.

Beggs will travel to Owasso this Friday to battle the Rejoice Christian Eagles, who finished as the district champion in 2A-8, in an opening- round contest that is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.

In last Thursday’s battle with Sperry, the visitors opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 17-yard TD run by Stanley Rivas. Rivas then toed the PAT kick for an early 7-0 advantage.

The Demons got on the scoreboard later in the opening frame on an 8-yard TD run by Darieon Johnson. The extra-point kick was off the mark to make it a 7-6 Sperry advantage after one quarter of action.

The Demons went in front, 12-7, in the second quarter on a 47-yard TD run by Red Martel. The try for two was unsuccessful, leaving the Beggs lead at five points.

A 1-yard run by QB Brady Benham and successful PAT kick by Rivas later in the second stanza gave Sperry a 14--12 advantage at the halftime break.

The second half began with back-toback TD runs of 1 and 2 yards by Benham with Rivas splitting the uprights with both extra-point kicks to extend Sperry’s lead to 28-12.

A 51-yard TD run by Ryan Grayson in the third quarter cut the deficit to 10 points, 28-18, but the Demons were unable to overcome the huge deficit, as the visitors tacked on a 7-yard TD run by Walter McCause in the final stanza. Rivas made good on the PAT kick to put the finishing touches on the Demons’ 35-18 setback.
