Inching Closer

Tigers near playoff berth with rout of Bluejacket

Twenty-four minutes.

That’s all the Wilson Tiger varsity football team needed to notch their sixth win of the 2022 campaign.

The Tigers used a 38-point scoring barrage in the second quarter this past Friday night to rout the host Bluejacket Chieftains by a 60-6 margin.

The ‘mercy rule’ win puts the Wilson gridiron squad one step closer to earning just their second postseason berth in school history, joining the 2020 Tiger team that made the playoffs despite a 2-6 season record, as the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association allowed every high school football team the opportunity to compete in the postseason due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The win over Bluejacket puts the Tigers at 4-1 in District C-3 play with Wilson currently tied for second with Coyle. The Tigers hold the the headto- head tiebreaker with Coyle due to a 48-14 home win over the Bluejackets on September 23.

Wilson was scheduled to host the South Coffeyville Lions this Thursday, but that contest was canceled on Monday by South Coffeyville.

The Tigers will close out the 2022 regular season next Friday at Watts for an all-important district battle with the Watts Engineers.

In last Friday’s road battle with Bluejacket, the Tigers got on the scoreboard first with a 25-yard TD run by Keshaun Shelbourn. The try for two was unsuccessful, giving the visitors the early 6-0 advantage.

The host Chieftains answered Shelbourn’s score with a 30-yard TD pass. The Wilson defense kept Bluejacket out of the end zone on the conversion attempt to deadlock the score at 6-6.

A 35-yard TD run by Keshaun Shelbourn later in the opening frame put the Wilson squad on top for good, 12-6. Talon Dobson’s successful conversion run extended Wilson’s lead to 14-6.

A 15-yard run by Dobson and successful conversion run by Asiah King gave the Tigers a 22-6 advantage after one quarter of action.

Wilson brought the district contest to a close on the 45-point mercy rule with a 38-point barrage in the second stanza, beginning with TD runs of 55 and 10 by Keshaun Shelbourn.

Bryson Miller called his own number on the first conversion attempt, while Tigers were held out of the end zone on the second attempt to lead 36-6.

The Wilson defense came up with the next score in the road game, as Keshaun Shelbourn scooped up a Bluejacket fumble at the Chieftains’ 37 and raced into the end zone for the defensive score. Miller’s successful conversion run made it 44-6, in favor of the visiting Tigers.

Nick Williams scampered 30 yards to paydirt for the next Wilson tally, while Cody Gryder bulldozed his way into the end zone for the conversion to extend the Tigers lead to 52-6.

The final Wilson score came when Tucker Watson returned a Bluejacket fumble 41 yards for the second defensive touchdown. Chris McKinney bounced into the end zone on the conversion to put the finishing touches on the Tigers’ 60-6 ‘mercy rule’ win.
