Eagles fall at Westville

The Morris Eagle varsity football team fell to 0-5 in district play following a 12-6 setback to the Westville Yellowjackets this past Friday night in Westville.

The Morris Eagle varsity football team fell to 0-5 in district play following a 12-6 setback to the Westville Yellowjackets this past Friday night in Westville.

The 6-point defeat keeps the Eagles in a tie for seventh in the District 2A-7 standings with Okmulgee and was just the second time the Morris squad failed to reach double digits in scoring this season. The only other time the Eagles did not score in double digits in 2022 was October 7 in a 35-6 loss to Victory Christian.

Morris will continue its search for its first district win in 2022 this Friday with a home meeting with its Okmulgee County rivals, the Beggs Golden Demons, who have won the last 12 meetings. The last Morris win in the county battle came in 2010 when the Eagles edged the Demons 21-14.

Friday’s county showdown in Morris is schedulded to get underway at 7 p.m. at Larry Bookout Field in Morris.

In last Friday’s district meeting with Westville, the game remained scoreless through the first 12 minutes of regulation.

Westville broke the scoreless tie in the second stanza on an 18-yard TD pass. The try for two was unsuccessful, giving the host Yellowjackets the 6-0 advantage.

Neither team was able to reach the end zone the remainder of the second quarter, sending the district contest into the halftime break with Morris trailing 6-0.

An Erik Macklin 5-yard run in the third quarter knotted the score at 6-6. The score remained at 6-6 after the Eagles were unable to reach the end zone on the conversion attempt.

Later in the third, Westville went back in front, 12-6, with a 1-yard TD run.

Neither team managed any more scores the remainder of the second half, putting the Morris Eagles on the short end of a 12-6 outcome.
