Henryetta watches 9-point lead evaporate in 33-30 loss
The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity football team found themselves in an early hole in last Friday’s road district game against the Warner Eagles.
The host Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead 40 seconds into the second quarter following a 9-yard TD run by Preston Cannon.
The Knights scored 30 unanswered points in the next 23 minutes, 17 seconds of gameplay to lead by nine, 30-21, with 11:48 remaining in regulation.
Warner scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to hand the visiting Henryetta squad a heartbreaking 33-30 setback.
The narrow loss puts the Knights at 2-4 on the season, 1-2 in District 2A-5.
The Henryetta gridiron squad will look to even their district record this Thursday at home against the Vian Wolverines, who sit atop the 2A-5 standings with Prague at 3-0.
Thursday’s district battle with Vian is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. at historic Cameron Field in Henryetta.
In last Friday’s district showdown in Warner, the host Eagles began the scoring at the 9:11 mark of the first quarter on a 5-yard TD run by Cannon. Keden Moseley toed the PAT kick to give Warner the early 7-0 advantage.
A 19-yard TD run by QB Jace Jackson at 6:34 of the first stanza pushed the Warner lead to double digits, 13-0. Moseley was once again good on the extra-point try to make it 14-point lead for the host squad.
Forty seconds into the second quarter saw Warner lead 21-0 with Cannon’s 9-yard TD run and successful PAT kick by Moseley.
With 5:15 remaining in the first half, the Knights found their way onto the scoreboard with a 10-yard TD run by David Reid. Nick Hudson crossed the goal line on the conversion try to cut the Warner lead to 13 points, 21-8.
Reid notched his second-straight touchdown of the second quarter at the 2:28 mark, rocketing down the field 62 yards to paydirt. Brady Norman hooked up with James Miller on the conversion attempt to make it a 21-16 contest at the intermission.
The Knights took over the lead at 24-21 at the 3:05 mark of the third quarter when Norman connected with William Perez on a 24-yard aerial strike. Hudson then ran in the conversion attempt for the 3-point Henryetta lead.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Reid raced 56 yards into the end zone for his third score of the contest, pushing the Knight advantage to nine, 3021, with 12 seconds removed from the final frame.
A 2-yard TD run by Cannon at the 9:46 mark cut the Henryetta lead to three, 30-27, then the host Eagles regained the lead at 33-30 with 2:05 remaining in regulation on a 55-yard pass from Jackson to Julian Hensley.
The Henryetta offense attempted to score a late touchdown, but were unable to find the end zone in the final two minutes of regulation to wind up on the short end of a 33-30 outcome.
