Dragons reach latest milestone in district opening win

The regular-season winning streak for the Dewar Dragon varsity football team reached 40 games this past Friday night in Webbers Falls.

The Dragons extended their win streak to the special milestone with a 52-6 rout of the host Webbers Falls Warriors.

The ‘mercy rule’ win came in the District B-5 opener for both teams.

The Dragons will look to continue their win streak this Thursday night with a home district meeting against the Porum Panthers. The Week 7 contest is scheduled to get started at 7 p.m. at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar.

In last Friday’s district opener, the Dewar squad got the scoring started on their second offensive series when quarterback Zack Mullen raced down the field 70 yards to paydirt. Nevin Corbin bulldozed his way across the goal line on the conversion attempt to give the visitors the early 8-0 advantage.

The Dragons added two more rushing TDs in the opening frame to increase their lead to 22-0 after the first 12 minutes of action.

The other two ground scores for the Dewar offense in the first quarter came from Nevin Corbin on runs of 2 and 58 yards, respectively. Nevin Corbin ran in the conversion attempt following his first score of the contest for a 16-0 margin, then the Dragons were stopped short of the goal line on the second conversion attempt for a 22-point Dewar lead.

A 2-yard TD run by Nevin Corbin and a successful conversion pass from Mullen to Kade Henderson began the second-quarter scoring, pushing the Dragons’ margin to 30 points, 30-0.

Nevin Corbin then added a 54-yard TD run later in the frame for his fourth score of the night. Mullen then hauled in a pass from Tryton Mack on the conversion try to make it a 36-0 contest. Corbin’s long-distance rushing touchdown came one play af- ter the Dragons had a 40-yard TD pass from Mullen to Cole Miller taken off the board due to a Dewar penalty.

Webbers Falls ended the Dragons’ shutout bid in the second quarter with a 32-yard TD run by Zane Nolan, cutting the Dewar lead to 36-6.

The final Dewar score of the first half came on a 60-yard scamper by Christian Cargola. Tylor Sullivan ran in the conversion attempt to send the teams to the intermission with the visiting Dragons in complete control, 44-6.

After the Dewar defense came away with a takeaway on the first series of the third quarter, as Keelan Berry intercepted a pass at the Dewar 40 and returned the turnover to the Webbers Falls 27.

The Dragons appeared to end the game on the 45-point mercy rule on the first play following the interception, as Cargola raced into the end zone from 27 yards out. For the second time in the contest, a Dewar touchdown was erased due to a penalty.

Four plays later, Ben Atoigue ended the game on the mercy rule with a game-ending 8-yard TD run, giving the Dragons their 40th-straight regular-season win and 31st-consecutive district victory. --- Dewar 52, Webbers Falls 6
