Beggs-Victory Christian clash highlights Week 5 schedule

Three county squads seek first district win Friday

District action began last week for five of the six Okmulgee County varsity football teams with the county squads notching two wins in those five district opening contests.

The Beggs Golden Demons got back on the winning track last Friday with a convincing 68-6 victory at home against Westville, while the Wilson Tigers earned their first-ever district win in school history last Thursday with a 48-14 decision at home against the Coyle Bluejackets.

The Demons and Tigers enter Week 5 looking to continue to remain at the top of their respective district standings, while the other three county gridiron squads enter Friday’s second week of district action seeking their first district wins of 2022 after beginning with double-digit losses in Week 4.

The three county squads that went winless in district play last Friday were the Okmulgee Bulldogs (60-20 loss to Victory Christian), Henryetta Golden Knights (56-12 loss to Prague), and Morris Eagles (22-12 loss to Kiefer).

The other county squad in action last week was the Dewar Dragons, who improved to 3-0 on the season with a 58-8 whitewashing of the visiting Arkoma Mustangs in the Dragons’ home opener.

Dewar will begin district play next week in Webbers Falls.

Besides Prague, the other three teams that earned District 2A-5 wins last Friday were Okemah (42-26 over Tahlequah Sequoyah), Vian (44-14 over Warner), and Roland (21-20 over Keys).

The only District 2A-7 contest last week that did not feature a county teams pitted the Sperry Pirates against the Kansas Comets, which Sperry won by a 41-20 margin.

In C-3, the Tigers were joined in the district win column last Friday by Watts (50-0 over South Coffeyville), Wesleyan Christian (54-6 over Oaks-Mission), and Copan (66-50 over Bluejacket).

Week 2 of district action involving county teams will be highlighted by the Beggs Golden Demons hosting the Victory Christian Conquerors in an all-important 2A-7 contest. The two teams have split their last two meetings with Beggs winning in 2020 by a 48-14 margin and Victory Christian edging out a 27-26 win in last year’s showdown in Tulsa.

The Conquerors enter Friday’s district battle with a 2-2 record with wins coming against Henryetta (42-6 in Week 1) and Okmulgee (60-20 in Week 4) and losses to Cascia Hall (26-21 in Zero Week) and Shiloh Christian, Arkansas (72-33 in Week 3).

The winner of this all-important district contest will remain atop the 2A-7 standings, while the loser will fall to the middle of the district standings and face a tough climb back to the top.

The other 2A-7 contests scheduled for Week 5 include Okmulgee traveling to Westville, Morris hosting Kansas, and Sperry hosting Kiefer.

The district battles in 2A-5 on Friday will see Henryetta host Tahlequah Sequoyah, Prague travel to Keys, Okemah host Warner, and Vian host Roland.

The District C-3 schedule for Week 5 features Wilson traveling to Oaks-Mission, Watts hosting Bluejacket, Copan hosting Wesleyan Christian, and Coyle hosting South Coffeyville.

The Dewar Dragons will close out their non-district schedule Friday with a trip to Velma-Alma and will put their current 38-game regular-season winning streak on the line against the Velma-Alma Comets, who enter the non-district finale with a 2-3 season record.

Kickoff for Friday’s contests featuring Okmulgee County varsity football teams is scheduled for 7 p.m.
