Sheriff’s Office to apply for local enforcement JAG grant

Commissioners host weekly meeting

Several Memorandums of Understanding were approved during Monday’s meeting of the Okmulgee County board of commissioners.

Approved were:

• Memorandum of Agreement with Muscogee Creek Nation.

• Memorandum of Understanding between Okmulgee County Emergency Management and William Wynn.

• Memorandum of Understanding between Okmulgee Sky Warn, Okmulgee County Emergency Management and William Wynn.

The Okmulgee County Sheriff ’s office requested permission to apply for the Justice Assistance Grant for Local Law Enforcement or JAG-LLE.

The JAG-LLE Program replaces the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEGB) and funding is made available to units of local law enforcement and tribal governments for the purchase of equipment.

With this grant, the sheriff ’s office will be using funding for the purchase of two mobile fingerprint ID machines.

“These machines are basically a tablet you use out in the field,” Undersheriff Fred McGuire said. “If you get someone that can’t or won’t give their identity or you suspect they’re giving a false identity, you can do a fingerprint scan, send it over the internet to the FBI and you get an immediate return so that you can identify a person positively.”

The agreement pays for the units and three years of service. The total amount requested in the application is for $8,010 and once approved, this agreement is refundable, meaning they would spend the money upfront and JAG would reimburse the monies spent within three weeks.

Okmulgee County Emergency Management Director Tim Craighton requested a two-week burn ban.

Since the previous ban was lifted, Okmulgee County “over the last two weeks has had around 2000 acres burned,” Craighton said. Just one of those fires burned 500 acres.

Dry vegetation and lack of rain is the cause for the fires.

Agenda items approved were:

• Blanket Purchase Orders: District 1 to Cintas for uniforms as needed for $800; District 3 to Cintas for uniforms as needed for $700 to O'Reilly's for parts and supplies for $300.

• Payment claims for Fiscal year 2021-22 in the amount of $6,004.63 and for Fiscal year 2022-23 in the amount of $267,199.64.

There were no officer’s reports, employee forms, utility permits or private property agreements submitted.

The Okmulgee County Board of Commissioners meet every Monday morning on the second floor of the Okmulgee County Courthouse inside the Commissioners room at 9 am.
