Double digit victory sends Henryetta into district play with 1-2 record
The Henryetta Golden Knight varsity football team awarded head coach Weston McGill his first coaching win this past Friday night with a 46-28 rout of the host Hartshorne Miners.
The 18-point win came in the final non-district game of 2022 for the Knight gridiron squad.
Henryetta will open District 2A-5 play this Friday with a trip to Prague.
Friday’s district opener against the Prague Red Devils is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m.
In last Friday’s non-district finale at Hartshorne, junior Nick Hudson accounted for five of the six Henryetta touchdowns in the 4-quarter contest.
Four of Hudson’s scores came on the ground, while the other TD came through the air.
The only touchdown not scored by Hudson against Hartshorne came on a rushing TD by David Reid in the fourth quarter.
The first half featured both teams totaling 58 points with Henryetta taking a slim 30-28 margin into the halftime break.
Hudson got the scoring started at the 7:23 mark of the first quarter with 4-yard TD run. Brady Norman connected with Hunter Gobin on the conversion attempt to give Henryetta the early 8-0 advantage.
The host Miners responded with a 26-yard TD pass from Jackson Moody to Kelby Thomason with 4:21 left in the opening frame. Moody then found Gus Miller on the conversion attempt to knot the score at 8-8.
Hudson put the Knights back on top with a 1-yard run at 1:20 of the first quarter then crossed the goal line on the conversion try to make it a 16-8 advantage for Henryetta after 12 minutes of action.
It took Hudson and the Knights 25 seconds into the second quarter to extend the Henryetta lead, as Hudson hauled in a pass from Norman and raced 70 yards to the end zone for his third score of the contest. The junior standout then found his way across the goal line on the conversion try to push Henryetta’s margin to 16 points, 24-8.
In a span of 20 seconds, the two teams exchanged scores to make it a 30-14 Henryetta advantage.
Moody called his number on a 24yard scamper for Hartshorne at the 7:35 mark for a 24-14 contest, while Hudson responded with a 52-yard TD run at 7:15 to regain the Knights’ 16-point lead.
Hartshorne cut the Henryetta margin back to 10 points, 30-20, with a 1-yard TD run by Acetin Rowell at 2:14, then closed the gap even further a little over a minute later, as Miller returned an interception 46 yards to paydirt at the 1:11 mark. Moody then hooked up with Brett Lindley on the conversion attempt following the defensive score to send the game to the intermission with Henryetta clinging to a narrow 30-28 margin.
After a defensive battle in the third quarter resulted in neither team producing any points in the frame, the non-district battle went into the final 12 minutes of regulation with the Knights still in front by two, 30-28.
David Reid’s 36-yard scamper, followed by Hudson’s successful conversion run, at 9:14 made it a 38-28 contest, while Hudson put the finishing touches on Coach McGill’s first head coaching win with an 18-yard TD run at the 5-minute mark. Reid crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt to make the final tally, 46-28, in favor of the visiting Henryetta Golden Knights.
