Lady Dragons take 2 of 3 in recent action

LARRY OWEN

The Dewar Lady Dragon varsity fastpitch softball team endured a 2-1 record in earlier action this week to improve to 8-5 on the season.

The two wins earlier this week came Tuesday in Okemah with a pair of 1-run victories. The Lady Dragons opened Tuesday’s action with a 4-3 victory over the Meeker Lady Bulldogs, then capped their 2-game win streak with a 7-6 decision over the host Okemah Lady Panthers.

Prior to the two road wins, the Dewar squad began the week with a home game against the Strother Lady Yellowjackets.

The Lady Dragons were unable to earn a home win on Monday, falling by a 12-2 decision in a game that needed 11 innings before a winner was decided.

The Dewar squad was back in action Thursday in Morris and will be home this Tuesday, hosting Okemah in a rematch.

In Monday’s home battle with Strother, the visitors broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the fourth.

The Lady Dragons tied the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Neither team was able to produce any runs in their half of the seventh to send the game to extra innings with the score deadlocked at 1-1.

Both offenses failed to score in the eighth, ninth, and 10th innings, while Strother plated 11 runs in the top of the 11th to take a 12-1 advantage.

The Lady Dragons were unable to overcome the huge deficit in the home half of the inning, managing just one run in the frame to suffer the 12-2 defeat.

Both Dewar runs scored when leadoff hitter Gracie Johnson doubled and scored on defensive miscues on the extra-base hits.

Bre Harvell (2 for 5, 2 singles) and Kinsey Maldonado (2 for 3, single, double) also recorded multi-hit games for the Lady Dragons in the extra-inning loss with two hits each. Maldonado also reached base on a pair of walks.

The only other Dewar baserunner on Monday was Melanie Burney, who drew a walk in the 11th.

In Tuesday’s battle with Meeker, the Lady Dragons opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first.

Meeker plated a run in the last of the first and added two in the second for a 3-2 advantage.

The Dewar squad regained the lead at 4-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the third.

Brailee England led the Dewar offense against Meeker, going 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and an RBI. The other two base hits for the Lady Dragons in the narrow win came on a single by Gracie Johnson and an RBI triple by Kinsey Maldonado.

Other Dewar baserunners against Meeker were Maldonado (walk), Bre Harvell (walk, RBI fielder’s choice), Jaycee DeTurk (walk), Maikya Carter (walk), and Ally Burney (walk).

In Tuesday’s meeting with Okemah, the Lady Dragons began the scoring with three runs in the top of the first.

Okemah cut the Dewar lead to one, 3-2, with two runs in the bottom of the second.

Both teams plated two runs in their half of the third to keep it a 1-run Dewar advantage, 5-4, while the Lady Dragons extended their lead to three, 7-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

The host Lady Panthers made a bid for a comeback in the bottom of the fourth, but the Dewar defense held Okemah to just two runs in the frame to walk away with the hard-fought 7-6 victory.

Leadoff hitter Gracie Johnson was the top hitter for Dewar against Okemah, finishing 2 for 3 with a single and double.

The other three base hits for Dewar in the narrow win came on singles by Bre Harvell and Jaycee DeTurk and an RBI single by Kinsey Maldonado.

Other Lady Dragon baserunners against Okemah were Harvell (walk), Maldonado (fielder’s choice), Ayana Gonzales (2 walks), Melanie Burney (walk), Maikya Carter (walk, hit by pitch), and Brailee England (walk).

Burney drove in one of the two Dewar runs in the third with an RBI sacrifice fly, while Harvell drove in one of the two Dewar runs in the fourth with an RBI ground out.
