Lady Pirates rout Mounds

The Preston Lady Pirate varsity fastpitch softball team remained unbeaten in District 2A-7 action Tuesday evening with a decisive 18-1 victory over the Mounds Lady Eagles.

The onsided win put the Lady Pirates at 3-0 in district play while also improving Preston’s season record at 12-1.

The Preston ladies were back in action on Thursday, traveling to Gore for a district battle with the Gore Lady Pirates. The Lady Pirates will close out their week Saturday at the Kiefer Festival then will travel to Porter on Monday for a District 2A-7 doubleheader with the Porter Lady Pirates.

In Tuesday’s district battle in Mounds, the Lady Pirates opened the scoring with eight runs in the top of the first. The Preston ladies put the game further out of reach in their half of the second, plating six runs in the frame for a commanding 14-0 advantage.

Mounds pushed across a run in the last of the second to break up Preston’s shutout bid, while the visitors put the finishing touches on the 17-run victory with a 4-run top of third.

Taylan Starr led the offensive attack for the victorious Lady Pirates, finishing 4 for 4 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, while driving in three runs. Starr’s four hits came on a single and triple in the first, double in the second, and a single in the third.

McKenna Jones (2 for 2, 2 singles, 3 RBIs) also recorded a multi-hit game for Preston on Tuesday with a pair of base hits. Jones also reached on a walk in her other plate appearance on Tuesday.

The other base hits for the Lady Pirates against Mounds came on a single by Jadyn Roberts, RBI singles by Na’Braijhanae Phillips and Kinlee Basquez, and 2-run single by Emilie Stidman.

Other Preston baserunners in the road game were Stidman (walk, error), Roberts (walk, error), Basquez (error), Celeste Pineda (walk, hit by pitch), Pheobey Finch (2 hit by pitches), and Kristen Houlby (RBI walk).

Stidman also drove in a run in the second with an RBI ground out.
