Lady Knights split district battle with Eufaula

LARRY OWEN

The Henryetta Lady Knight varsity fastpitch softball team came away with a 1-1 record in their district showdown earlier this week with the Eufaula Lady Ironheads.

Eufaula took the opening district battle Monday in Henryetta by a 4-0 margin.

Henryetta avoided the district sweep on Tuesday in Eufaula, walking away with a narrow 7-4 victory.

The 1-1 record against Eufaula puts the Lady Knights at 3-2 in district play.

The Henryetta diamond squad returned to action on Thursday with a home battle with the Kellyville Lady Ponies. The Lady Knights will begin next week’s schedule with back-to-back district battles with Holdenville, traveling to Holdenville on Monday and hosting the Lady Wolverines on Tuesday.

In Monday’s district showdown in Henryetta, the Lady Knights were shut out for the second time in 2022 and were held to six hits in the home contest.

The top hitter for Henryetta on Monday was McKayla Greenhaw, who went 2 for 4, with a pair of singles.

The other four hits came on singles by Brooklyn Baughman, Skylar Morris, and Kinley Miller and double by Serenity Rex.

Other HHS baserunners on Monday were Baughman (fielder’s choice), Morris (fielder’s choice), Shelby Kilhoffer (error), and Ailanee Hicks (2 walks).

Eufaula broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the fourth then tacked on insurance run in the sixth to complete the 4-0 outcome.

In Tuesday’s meeting in Eufaula, the Lady Knights started the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first.

Eufaula tallied a run in each of the first two innings to knot the score at 2-2 after two innings of action.

Henryetta regained the lead at 4-2 with two runs in the top of the third, while the host Lady Ironheads made it a 4-3 contest with a run in the home half of the fourth.

After a scoreless fifth, the visitors extended their lead to 7-3 with three runs in the top of the sixth.

Eufaula pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-4 advantage for the visiting Lady Knights with one inning remaining in regulation.

After Henryetta was unable to increase its lead in the top of the seventh, the Lady Knight defense kept the host Lady Ironheads off the scoreboard in their last at-bat of regulation to walk away with the 7-4 victory.

Shelby Kilhoffer was the top hitter for Henryetta on Tuesday, finishing 3 for 4 at the plate and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Kilhoffer began her 3-hit game with a one-out solo home run in the first. The Henryetta slugger added a double in the third and a single in the seventh to complete her 3-hit performance.

The trio of Serenity Rex (2 for 4, 2 doubles), Ailanee Hicks (2 for 4, single, home run, RBI), and Brooklyn Baughman (2 for 4, single, double, 2 RBIs) also tallied multi-hit games for the Lady Knights on Tuesday with two hits each. Hicks’ roundtripper came on a solo blast with two outs in the first.

The final three HHS base hits on Tuesday came on a single by McKayla Greenhaw, RBI single by Kassidy Lee, and 2-run single by Kinley Miller.

Other baserunners in Eufaula were Baughman (fielder’s choice), Skylar Morris (error), and Winter Beaver (walk).
