Lady Eagles earn four straight shutout wins in recent action

LARRY OWEN

In the last six games and a total of 22 innings, the Morris Lady Eagle varsity fastpitch softball team has not allowed a single run to be scored.

The last time an opponent scored against the Morris defense was the fifth inning of last Friday’s Pool Play game against Oilton - a 10-3 Morris victory at the Oilton Tournament.

In those same six contests, the Lady Eagle offense has totaled 70 runs. The last four shutout wins came earlier this week, defeating Okemah by margins of 8-0 and 10-0, respectively, Monday in Morris, and Choteau-Mazie (11-0) and Checotah (13-0), respectively, Tuesday in Checotah.

The four shutout wins this week put the Lady Eagles’ season record at 16-2, heading into Thursday’s home game with Liberty (Mounds).

The Morris squad will kick off next week’s schedule with back-to-back district battles with the Eufaula Lady Ironheads, traveling to Eufaula on Monday and hosting the McIntosh County foe on Tuesday.

In Monday’s opening battle with Okemah, the Lady Eagles began the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, then added three in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth for the 8-0 victory.

The trio of Maddie Moore (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), Jessica Wilson (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), and Emma Duclos (2 for 3, single, double, RBI) led the way offensively for Morris with two hits each.

The other three hits in Monday’s opening game with Okemah came on singles by Briley Cagle, Firé Clark, and Brooklynn Thomas. Thomas also reached on a defensive miscue in the contest, as did Kaydence Ausbrooks.

In Monday’s nightcap with the visiting Lady Panthers, the Morris offense began the scoring with three runs in the home half of the first. The Lady Eagles added four in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth to earn the Morris ladies the 10-0 victory.

The Morris offensive output in Monday’s nightcap was led by the duo of Emma Duclos (2 for 2, 2 singles) and Briley Cagle (2 for 2, 2 singles, 2 RBIs) with two hits each.

The other four hits for the Lady Eagles in Monday’s second game came on a single by Kaydence Ausbrooks, RBI single by Jessica Wilson, 2-run single by Alli Guynes, and an inside-the-park solo home run in the second by Marti Yaerger.

Other Morris baserunners against Okemah were Yaerger (walk), Ausbrooks (error), Maddie Moore (walk), Camara Casey (walk), and Brooklynn Thomas (error).

Wilson drove in a run in the second with an RBI ground out, while Thomas drove in the lone Morris run in the third with an RBI sacrifice fly.

In Tuesday’s road battle with Chouteau-Mazie in Checotah, the Lady Eagles did most of their offensive damage in the opening inning, erupting for eight runs in the frame. The Morris diamond squad added three in the second for the 11-0 victory.

Emma Duclos retired all nine batters she faced in the circle to record the 3-inning, perfect-game, shutout pitch- ing win for Morris.

Maddie Moore led the Lady Eagle offense against Chouteau-Mazie with a 2-for-3, 3-RBI performance. Both of Moore’s base hits came on singles.

The other four Morris hits against Chouteau-Mazie came on singles by Duclos and Kaydence Ausbrooks and RBI singles by Jessica Wilson and Firé Clark.

Other Lady Eagle baserunners in the shutout win were Wilson (walk), Duclos (hit by pitch), Clark (error), Marti Yaerger (walk), Briley Cagle (walk), Ashlyn Clevenger (walk, error), and Brooklynn Thomas (RBI walk).

In Tuesday’s road battle with Checotah, the Lady Eagles started the scoring with three runs in the top of the second. After a scoreless third, the Morris offense erupted for 10 runs in the top of the fourth to put the finishing touches on their 13-0 victory.

The quartet of Maddie Moore (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBIs), Emma Duclos (2 for 3, 2 singles), Briley Cagle (2 for 3, single, triple, 2 RBIs), and Brooklynn Thomas (2 for 3, single, double, 3 RBIs) were tops offensively for Morris against Checotah with two hits each.

The final three base hits for the Lady Eagles against Checotah came on RBI singles by Jessica Wilson and Ashlyn Clevenger and a 3-run inside-the-park home run in the fourth by Marti Yaerger.

Other Morris baserunners in Tuesday’s nightcap were Moore (walk), Cagle (error), Clevenger (fielder’s choice, error), Firé Clark (2 fielder’s choices, error), and Kaydence Ausbrooks (fielder’s choice).
