Stigler takes Henryetta OK Kids regional title

The Stigler Savage 8-Under Coach Pitch team took home the OK Kids Region 6 championship last Saturday in Henryetta.

The Stigler Savage 8-Under Coach Pitch team took home the OK Kids Region 6 championship last Saturday in Henryetta.

The Savages took home the regional crown following a win over the Hobart Hitmen in the first (of a possible 2) championship game.

The Region 6 tournament also featured two Okmulgee County teams - the Okmulgee Team Jedi and the host Henryetta Dingers.

Besides Stigler and Hobart, the other four teams that competed at the 3-day event last weekend were the Checotah Redhawks, Wetumka Legends, Sallisaw Red Sox, and Spiro Dodgers.

The regional tournament kicked off last Thursday with four first-round games, beginning with the Wetumka Legends earning a win over the Checotah Redhawks. The Stigler Savages were the next team to advance with an opening-round win over the Hobart Hitmen.

The final two first-round contests featured the two county teams. The Okmulgee Team Jedi fell into the loser’s bracket side of the tournament with an opening-round loss to the Sallisaw Red Sox, while the Henryetta Dingers rallied from an early deficit to advance with a win over the Spiro Dodgers.

Friday’s tournament action featured seven contests, kicking off with the Hobart Hitmen avoiding elimination with a loser’s bracket win over the Checotah Redhawks. The next eliminated team was the Spiro Dodgers, who fell to the Okmulgee Team Jedi, in the second loser’s bracket game of the second day of tournament action.

The next two tournament games on Friday were winner’s bracket contests between the Stigler Savages and the Wetumka Legends and the Henryetta Dingers and the Sallisaw Red Sox.

The Savages were the first team to advance to the semifinal round with a win over Wetumka, while the host Dingers moved one step closer to a state tournament berth with a quarterfinal win over Sallisaw.

The Sallisaw Red Sox saw their state tournament dreams dashed in the next contest, falling to the Hobart Hitmen.

The Okmulgee Team Jedi continued their journey through the loser’s bracket with an elimation-game-winning victory over the Wetumka Legends.

The final contest last Friday saw the Stigler Savages punch their ticket to the championship game with a semifinal win over the host Henryetta Dingers.

Saturday’s final day of tournament action saw the Hobart Hitmen earn a rematch with the Stigler Savages in the regional title game following a pair of loser’s bracket wins over the two county teams in back-to-back elimination contests. The Savages ended the Okmulgee Team Jedi’s State bid in the loser’s bracket semfinals, then punched their ticket to the championship game with a win over the host Henryetta Dingers in the loser’s bracket finals.

Hobart’s 4-game winning streak through the loser’s bracket ended in the title game, as Stigler escaped victorious for the regional championship and a spot in this weekend’s OK Kids Coach Pitch state tournament in Clinton.

Despite the loss to the Savages in the title game, the Hobart Hitmen will have a chance to compete for a state championship as the Region 6 runner-up.
