Current featured books for the week include “Jumanji,” “Bad Day at Riverbend,” “Just a Dream” and “The Polar Express” by author Chris Van Allsburg.
Author Biography:
Chris Van Allsburg, American illustrator and writer of children’s books, was born June 18, 1949 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Born into a Dutch family, he had one older sister, Karen.
Van Allsburg liked to do all the usual boy things playing baseball, building model cars and riding his bike. He loved reading comic books and his favorite book as a child was “Harold and the Purple Crayon.”
He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do in life until high school graduation and then he turned toward art.
Van Allsburg set up a sculpture studio after graduation from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975 with a Masters’ Degree in Sculpture.
His first published book was “The Garden of Abdul Gasazi” in 1979.
Two of his books, “Jumanji,” published in 1981 and “The Polar Express,” published in 1985, were both made into successful motion pictures.
Van Allsburg and his wife, Lisa, live in Beverly, Mass. and have two daughters, Sophia and Anna.
His hobbies are riding his bike and playing tennis.
