The Henryetta Lady Knight varsity softball program continued to have successful seasons in 2021-2022.

The Henryetta Lady Knight varsity softball program continued to have successful seasons in 2021-2022.

The Lady Knights missed their chance at their first repeat state tournament appearance in fastpitch softball for the first time since making two-straight trips in 2013-14 in 2021, dropping back-to-back games in the Class 3A regional tournament in Dewey.

The Henryetta slowpitch softball team earned their third state tournament appearance in the last four years (Henryetta had its 2020 season canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic) in 2022.

The Lady Knights began the fourth season under head coach Ryan Swallow on August 9 with a 13-1 victory over the Checotah Lady Wildcats.

After the run-rule win over Checotah in the season opener, the Henryetta diamond squad suffered losses in their next four games - including three straight at the Broken Arrow Tournament August 13 and 14.

The Lady Knights snapped their 4-game losing streak on August 16 with a 15-0 victory over county rival, the Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs. The run-rule win over Okmulgee came in the District 3A-7 opener in Henryetta.

The Henryetta squad finished 8-4 in district play, tying arch rival Morris for second in the district standings behind Haskell. The Lady Knights’ four district losses came against Haskell (2-1 on August 10 and 4-3 on September 16) and Morris (10-6 on September 13 and 5-3 on September 14).

The other seven district wins for the Lady Knights came against Okmulgee (11-1 on August 17), Eufaula (5-1 on August 23 and 9-3 on August 24), Holdenville (10-2 on August 30 and 4-2 on August 31), and Beggs (21-0 on September 20 and 16-0 on September 21).

After the district sweep of Okmulgee, the Henryetta squad competed at the Oktaha Tournament August 19 and 20. The Lady Knights began the Oktaha Tournament with losses to Tahlequah Sequoyah (4-0) and Hartshorne (4-1) then ended tournament action with run-rule wins over the Oktaha JV (17-2) and Oktaha (8-0) in back-to-back games for a 2-2 finish.

The run-rule win over the Oktaha JV sparked a 5-game winning streak that ended August 26 with a 10-0 win over county rival, the Preston Lady Pirates to sit at 8-6.

The Lady Knights ended the month of August with a split at the Kiefer Festival on August 28 (1-0 loss to Bixby and 4-1 win over Kiefer) and district wins over Holdenville, sitting at 12-8 after the first month of action.

Henryetta began its second month of the fastpitch season with a 5-1 win over Prague in a September 2 home game.

The Lady Knights competed at the Silo Tournament September 9-11, finishing the 3-day event with a 3-3 record for a 16-9 record.

The three wins at the Silo Tournament came against Hartshorne (9-3), Antlers (3-2), and Davis (4-3), while the three losses came against Tishomingo (5-2), Silo (2-0), and Broken Bow (7-2).

After the district action against Morris, Haskell, and Beggs, the Lady Knights closed out their regular-season schedule with back-to-back losses to Dale (4-3) on September 23 and Bristow (4-1) on September 27.

With its third-place finish in the 3A-7 standings, the Henryetta softball team traveled to Dewey to compete in a Class 3A regional tournament that also included Tahlequah Sequoyah, Holdenville, and the host Dewey Lady Bulldoggers.

The Lady Knights began their postseason schedule with a 6-0 loss to the Tahlequah Sequoyah Lady Indians, then saw their chances at a repeat state tournament appearance disappear with a 5-1 loss to Holdenville in the loser’s bracket elimination game.

The back-to-back regional tournament losses ended Henryetta’s 2021 fastpitch season with an 18-16 record.

In the 2022 slowpitch softball campaign, the Lady Knights won their first 19 games, beginning with a 14-6 win over Checotah and 9-0 win over Okemah on March 7 in Henryetta.

The other 17 wins came at the North Rock Creek Tournament March 10 (2-1 over Hinton, 12-6 over Cache, and 5-1 over Newcastle), the Henreytta Creek Classic March 24 and 25 (16-4 over Prague, 13-6 over Silo, 11-1 over Preston, and 10-9 over Coalgate), the Heartland Conference Festival in Okmulgee (7-0 forfeit over Beggs, 11-1 over Kellyville, 13-1 over Kiefer, 11-3 over Eufaula, 12-2 over Morris, and 12-6 over Preston), April 5 against Preston (10-4) and Holdenville (15-3), and the first two rounds of the Checotah Tournament on April 7 (14-1 over Roland and 5-0 over Checotah).

The first loss of the 2022 season came April 7 at the Checotah Tournament with a 5-2 setback to Pocola. The Lady Knights concluded the Checotah Tournament with a narrow 6-5 loss to Oktaha.

After a 19-5 win over Checotah on April 12 pushed its season record to 20-2, the Henryetta diamond squad finished 1-2 at the Firelake Festival on April 14 with the lone win coming against Bixby by a 7-1 margin.

After a 9-7 loss to Prague concluded their Firelake Festival participation, the Lady Knights won their next eight games to earn a repeat appearance at the Class 4A state slowpitch softball championships in Oklahoma City.

During the 8-game winning streak, the Henryetta squad earned wins over Cushing (6-2) and Bristow (10- 0) on April 19. The win over Cushing awarded the Lady Knights the championship plaque from the North Rock Creek Tournament that was postponed by inclement weather on March 10.

After the shutout win over Bristow, the Henryetta squad began their postseason play April 21 with a Best-of-3 district tournament series against Meeker. The Lady Knights dispatched the Lady Bulldogs with back-to-back 11-1 victories to capture the Class 4A district championship.

After sweeping Meeker in the district championship, the Henryetta diamond squad closed out their regular-season schedule with run-rule wins over Chandler (15-0) on April 25 and Eufaula (14-2) on April 26 to enter the regional tournament with a 27-4 record.

On April 27, the Lady Knights hosted one of four 4-team Class 4A regional tournaments and was joined by Wyandotte, Haskell, and Prague.

Henryetta began its regional tournament action with a 17-4 victory over Wyandotte, then punched its ticket to the state tournament with a 13-4 win over Haskell in the regional title game.

The Lady Knights were matched up against the Valliant Lady Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state slowpitch softball championships at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

The Henryetta squad was unable to get their offense going in the firstround meeting with Valliant, falling by a 15-0 margin to the Lady Bulldogs to end their 2022 slowpitch softball season with a 29-5 record and a No. 3 ranking in Class 4A.

Coach Swallow will have four vacancies to fill this coming fastpitch season, as standouts Avery Miller, Katelyn Dwiggins, Jalynn Joslin, and Kasedi Gobin, closed out their high school softball careers with the opening-round loss to Valliant on May 9.

With the returning members of their 2021-2022 rosters, along with some incoming freshmen, the Lady Knights could quite possibly continue to have success on the softball diamond in years to come.
