Chelsea Dungee saw her basketball career take a different turn this past Monday.
After a 1-year stint in the WNBA, the former Preston High School standout is turning in her basketball uniform and sneakers for a work suit and dress shoes, being hired Monday as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball program at Troy University in Troy, Alabama.
Dungee will be joining the Trojans coaching staff under head coach Chanda Rigby for the upcoming 2022-2023 campaign.
Dungee began her high school basketball career at Preston High School in February of 2013, playing in a total of nine games. In her sophomore season at Preston, the talented athlete helped guide the Lady Pirates to a state championship.
After the 2014 championship, Dungee finished the final two seasons of her high school cage career at Sapulpa High School, then took her talents to the collegiate level, competing at the University of Oklahoma under head coach Sherri Coale.
Prior to winning a state championship in 2014, Dungee helped the United States to a gold medal at the FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship in Cancun, Mexico, in 2013.
After completing her freshman season with the Sooners, Dungee transferred from the Norman school to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. After sitting out the 2017-18 season due to the NCAA’s transfer policies, Dungee stepped on the court for the Razorbacks in 2018, finishing the final three years of her college career in Fayetteville.
After closing out her collegiate career, Dungee was selected by the Dallas Wings (formerly Tulsa Shock) with the fifth pick in the first round of the 2021 WNBA Draft.
In her one year at Dallas, Dungee competed in a total of 14 games for the Wings before spending the offseason playing in Istanbul, Turkey for Galatasaray - a women’s basketball section of Galatasaray S.K., a major sports club in Istanbul - and the Sydney Uni Flames - a Women’s Basketball League team in Sydney, Australia.
After returning from her one season overseas, Dungee was set to begin her second year with the Wings, but was released on April 26.
Dungee joins a Trojan program that finished the 2021-2022 season with a 24-9 record, 13-2 in the Sun Belt Conference and competed in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament, losing to Alabama in the first round by an 82-79 margin.
