Dragons drop Top 5 battle with Red Oak

The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball team came up on the losing end of an 8-0 outcome last Thursday against Red Oak at historic Wiley Ryal Park in Dewar.

The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball team came up on the losing end of an 8-0 outcome last Thursday against Red Oak at historic Wiley Ryal Park in Dewar.

Last Thursday’s meeting with Red Oak was between Top 5 teams in Class A (Red Oak is ranked third; Dewar is ranked fifth).

The Dragons were held to just five hits - all singles - and had two other hitters reach base on defensive miscues in the contest.

The five base hits came off the bats of Thomas Brownfield, Jaden Maxwell, Aiden Tomlinson, Zack Mullen, and Tryton Mack.

Christian Cargola reached on a defensive error, while Jerron Brison reached base on catcher’s interference.

The Dragons were back in action Monday, battling the Warner Eagles at Connors State College in Warner.

The Dewar squad will begin postseason play Thursday with Class A district tournament action at historic Wiley Ryal Park in Dewar.

The Dragons will host Canadian and Wetumka in a 3-team district tournament.

Below is the Class A district tournament schedule in Dewar.

Team A - Dewar

Team B - Wetumka

Team C - Canadian

Game 1: Dewar vs Canadian; Thursday, 12 p.m.

Game 2: Wetumka vs Canadian; Thursday, 2 p.m.

Game 3: Dewar vs Wetumka; Thursday, 4 p.m.

If there are two teams remaining after Game 3:

Game 4: Team with no losses vs Team with one loss; Friday, 2 p.m.

Game 5 (if necessary): Team with no losses vs Team with one loss; Friday, 4 p.m.

If all teams have one loss after Game 3:

Game 4: Wetumka vs Canadian; Friday, 2 p.m.

Game 5: Game 4 winner vs Dewar; Friday, 4 p.m.

In last Thursday’s Top 5 showdown in Dewar, Red Oak got the scoring started with four runs in the top of the first inning. The visitors tacked on two in the fourth and two in the sixth to complete the 8-0 outcome.

Mullen absorbed the pitching loss for Dewar, allowing six runs on five hits, striking out two, walking three, and hitting a batter in four innings of work.

Brownfield worked the final two innings in relief and gave up two runs on no hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
