Morris softball sweeps home battles

The Morris high school slowpitch softball team had a very busy schedule this past Friday.

The Morris high school slowpitch softball team had a very busy schedule this past Friday.

The Lady Eagles began their busy schedule with a pair of Pool Play games at the annual Dewar Invitational Slowpitch Softball Tournament then took on Kiefer and Tulsa Memorial in a pair of home games later Friday.

See today’s edition for complete details of the Morris slowpitch softball team’s participation at the Dewar Tournament last Friday.

In last Friday’s home meeting with Kiefer, the visitors opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first. The host Lady Eagles did not trail for long, pushing across eight runs in the home half of the inning for an 8-1 advantage.

The Morris squad added four in the second then both teams tallied a run in their half of the third for a 13-2 margin for the Lady Eagles.

Kiefer was only able to produce one run in the top of the fourth to award the host Morris ladies the 13-3 victory.

The Morris offense scattered 15 hits in the runrule win, led by Emily Guynes, who went 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and 3 RBIs.

Other Lady Eagle batters with multi-hit games against Kiefer last Friday were Emma Duclos (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), Marti Yaerger (2 for 2, 2 singles), Faith London (2 for 3, single, double, 2 RBIs), Ashlyn Clevenger (2 for 3, 2 singles), and Kaydence Ausbrooks (2 for 3, 2 singles) with two hits apiece.

The final three base hits for Morris against Kiefer came on a single by Briley Cagle and RBI doubles by Avery Deeringwater and Jessica Wilson.

Other baserunners in last Friday’s run-rule victory were Yaerger (RBI walk), London (error), Wilson (error), Guynes (walk), Te’a Zackery (2 errors), and Camara Casey (error).

Cagle drove in one of the four Morris runs in the second with an RBI sacrifice fly.

In last Friday’s battle with Tulsa Memorial, the Lady Eagles did most of their offensive damage in the first, plating 11 runs in the frame. The Morris offense tacked on five runs in the last of the second, while the Lady Eagle defense held the Lady Chargers in check in the top of the third to walk away with the 16-0, shutout, win.

The top hitter for the Lady Eagles was Emma Duclos, who blasted a Grand Slam home run in the 11-run first. Duclos also reached on a walk in the contest.

Marti Yaerger also recorded a roundtrip extra-base hit in the win with an Inside-the-Park 3-run blast in the second. Yaerger’s first two trips to the plate resulted in the Morris sluggers taking first on back-to-back walks.

The other base hits for the Lady Eagles against Tulsa Memorial came on singles by Avery Deeringwater, Faith London, Emily Guynes, Alli Guynes, Kylie Hawkins, and Caidence Whitlow and 2-run singles by Jessica Wilson and Kaydence Ausbrooks.

Other baserunners for Morris in the shutout win were Deeringwater (walk), London (walk, error), Wilson (RBI walk, fielder’s choice), Te’a Zackery (RBI walk), Camara Casey (walk), Firé Clark (walk), and Dezmond Lewis (walk).
