Dragons throttle Varnum to stay perfect

The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball team continued their dominance on the diamond in the early stages of the 2022 season last Thursday afternoon.

The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball team continued their dominance on the diamond in the early stages of the 2022 season last Thursday afternoon.

The Dragons improved to 6-0 on the year with a 22-0 thrashing of the visiting Varnum Whippets at Wiley Ryal Park in Dewar.

The Dewar diamond squad will take their unbeaten record to Wright City on Thursday and Friday, competing in the Wright City Festival.

The Dragons are scheduled to battle Cushing and Lone Grove on Thursday and the host Wright City Lumberjax on Friday.

After the 2-day competition at Wright City, the Dewar squad will return home next Monday and Tuesday in a pair of 3-team showdowns. The Dragons will welcome Strother and Okmulgee County mates, the Okmulgee Bulldogs, to town next Monday, then will play host to Crowder and Earlsboro next Tuesday. Both days’ action is scheduled to get started at 3:30 p.m. at Wiley Ryal Park in Dewar.

In last Thursday’s rout of Varnum, the Dragons did most of their offensive damage in the bottom of the first, erupting for 14 runs in the frame. The Dewar squad tacked on four in the second and two each in the third and fourth innings to put the finishing touches on the 22-0 victory.

Jameson Ross worked four scoreless innings on the mound for Dewar to earn the pitching win. Ross allowed just one base hit, while striking out 11, walking one, and hitting a batter in his quality start.

Kade Henderson walked two and struck out two in his scoreless inning of relief work in the fifth. Jerron Brison led the way offensively for the Dragons, finishing 3 for 3 with a pair of singles, a double, and 4 RBIs.

Ross also had a 3-hit game in the win, going 3 for 3 at the plate with three singles and 3 RBIs.

The trio of Henderson (2 for 2, 2 doubles, RBI), Tryton Mack (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI), and Thomas Brownfield (2 for 2, 2 singles, 2 RBIs) also had multi-hit games for Dewar in the shutout win with two hits apiece.

The other Dragon base hits against Varnum came on RBI singles by Garrett Loyd and Jaden Maxwell and a 2-run single by Marshall Been.

Other baserunners last Thursday were Been (walk), Loyd (3 errors), Maxwell (RBI walk), Keelan Berry (walk), Christian Cargola (walk), Ashton Hawkins (walk, error), and Aiden Tomlinson (error). Jacob Paden drove in a run in the contest with an RBI groundout.
