The 2021 Class A state semifinalist Dragons began their season last Thursday at home, battling the Stroud Tigers. The Dewar diamond squad then hosted county rival Wilson on Friday before going on the road for the first time in 2022 on Saturday, traveling to Gore for a meeting with the Gore Pirates.
In the 3-game winning streak last weekend, the Dragons outscored their opponents by a 47-4 in a total of 13 1/2 innings of action.
The Dewar squad was back in action on Monday, hosting the Depew Hornets, and were also at home on Tuesday against the Allen Mustangs.
The Dragons will close out this week’s 4-game home schedule Thursday and Friday against Varnum and Butner, respectively.
In last Thursday’s season opening win over Stroud, the Dragons opened the scoring with four runs in the home half of the first, then added two in the second, four in the third, and three in the fourth for a commanding 13-0 advantage.
Stroud broke up the shutout bid with three runs in the top of the fifth to award the host Dewar Dragons the 13-3, run-rule, win.
The Dragons finished with 10 hits offensively in the season-opening win. Aiden Tomlinson led the way for Dewar against Stroud, finishing 2 for 4 at the plate with a pair of singles and 3 RBIs.
Ashton Hawkins was next for the Dewar diamond squad last Thursday, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and 2 RBIs.
The trio of Jameson Ross (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI, walk, error), Thomas Brownfield (2 for 3, 2 singles, walk, error), and Marshall Been (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI) rounded out the Dragon offensive attack with two hits apiece.
Other Dewar hitters to reach base in the opener were Tryton Mack (error), Garrett Loyd (3 walks), Christian Cargola (walk), and Jaden Maxwell (2 walks).
Brownfield got the start on the bump for Dewar last Thursday and worked three scoreless innings, striking out 10.
Ross worked the final two innings in relief, allowing three runs on one hit, striking out five and walking four.
In Friday’s county meeting with Wilson, the Dragons did most of their offensive damage in the second inning, pushing across 17 runs in the frame. The Dewar squad began the scoring with a 9-run first.
Aiden Tomlinson earned the pitching win for Dewar, striking out six and walking three in two scoreless innings of work.
The only baserunners for Wilson in the contest were David Cotton, Matthew Finley, and Austin Winn, who reached base on walks.
Offensively, the Dragons tallied 10 hits in the win, led by the duo of Garrett Loyd (2 for 2, single, double, 3 RBIs, walk) and Jaden Maxwell (2 for 2, 2 singles, 2 RBIs) with two hits each.
The other Dewar base hits on Friday came on singles by Tomlinson, Tryton Mack, Coy Birdtail, Thomas Brownfield, and Ashton Hawkins, and an RBI single by Kase Griffin.
Other baserunners against Wilson were Mack (2 walks), Hawkins (walk), Tomlinson (walk), Jameson Ross (walk), Marshall Been (3 walks), Keelan Berry (walk), Christian Cargola (walk), Kade Henderson (walk), Andrew Paden (walk), Jacob Paden (walk), and Jerron Brison (walk).
In Saturday’s road win at Gore, the Dragons jumped out to a 6-0 lead after their first two at-bats, scoring four in the first and two in the second.
After the next three and one-half innings went scoreless, both teams tal lied a run in the sixth for a 7-1 Dewar advantage.
The visitors tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh, then kept the host Pirates off the scoreboard in the home half of the inning to walk away with the 8-1 decision.
Jameson Ross earned the pitching win for Dewar, allowing just three hits, while striking out 11 and walking two in five scoreless innings of work.
Thomas Brownfield entered out of the bullpen in the sixth, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts and two walks in two innings of relief.
Brownfield (3 for 4, 2 singles, home run, 2 RBIs) and Tryton Mack (3 for 4, 3 singles) were the top hitters for the Dragons against Gore with three hits apiece.
The duo of Garrett Loyd (2 for 2, single, double) and Aiden Tomlinson (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI) also recorded multi-hit games for Dewar in the road win with two hits each.
The final two base hits for the Dragons on Saturday came on a single by Jaden Maxwell and a 2-run home run by Ross. The only other baserunners for Dewar at Gore were Maxwell (2 hit by pitch) and Christian Cargola (hit by pitch).
