Morris junior Jaxen Wright accomplished something this past Saturday night that no other athlete had done at the Okmulgee County school.
Wright, in his third-straight state wrestling tournament appearance, etched his name into the school’s history books by becoming the first Morris wrestler to bring home a Top 2 finish at the annual 2-day event.
Wright, who entered this year’s Class 3A State Wrestling Championships following another first in school history - an individual regional championship, became the first Eagle grappler to compete for a state championship with a 9-2 decision over Marlow’s Cody Davis in the semifinal round of the 160-pound weight class.
Wright was denied his bid to become the first-ever state champion wrestler at Morris, falling by a 9-2 decision to unbeaten Chance Davis of Perry in the championship match.
The Morris junior, who finished fourth in 2020 and third last year, found himself in the semifinal match against Cody Davis with a pinfall win over Blackwell’s Lawson Lusk at the 3:39 mark of his tournament opener on Friday.
Wright will have one final opportunity to write his name in the Morris history books as a state champion next season, as the Morris grappler will seek his fourth-straight trip to the state wrestling tournament.
