Henryetta comes up short at districts

The Henryetta varsity basketball program finds themselves in a tough situation in their journey towards the Class 3A state basketball championships following a sweep last Friday against Valliant in the Area III, District 3 championship games at Valliant High School.

The Henryetta varsity basketball program finds themselves in a tough situation in their journey towards the Class 3A state basketball championships following a sweep last Friday against Valliant in the Area III, District 3 championship games at Valliant High School.

The Lady Knights came up on the short end of a 44- 38 outcome against the Valliant Lady Bulldogs in the opening contest last Friday, while the Knights found themselves on the losing end of a 54-42 decision to the host Valliant Bulldogs in the nightcap.

The Henryetta cage squads will look to keep its cage campaign alive this Thursday in the regional consolation quarterfinals at the Henryetta Event Center. The Lady Knights will battle Antlers in the girls elimination game Thursday at 1:30 p.m., while the Knights will take on former Beggs boys coach Burtchal Griffin and the Idabel Warriors at 3 p.m. Thursday in a ‘must win’ contest for both teams.

Wins on Thursday will put Henryetta into Friday’s consolation semifinal action of the Class 3A, Area III regional tournament at the Henryetta Event Center at 6:30 and 8 p.m., respectively, while losses on Thursday will end Henryetta’s bid for a state tournament appearance in 2021-2022.

In Friday’s girls district title game in Valliant, the Lady Knights were outscored 13-9 in the opening frame, then edged the host Lady Bulldogs by an 8-7 margin in the second stanza to trail 20-17 at halftime.

The Henryetta ladies were unable to overcome the slim deficit in the final two quarters, as Valliant took the final two periods by margins of 13-11 and 11-10, respectively, to put the Lady Knights on the short end of a 44-38 decision.

The offensive leader for Henryetta in the district title loss was McKayla Greenhaw with a team-high 14-point performance. Brooklyn Baughman was next in the scoring column for the Lady Knights with 10.

Katelyn Dwiggins was next for Henryetta with six points, while Kassidy Lee and Aliyah Harjochee rounded out the scoring for HHS in the loss with four points each.

In Friday’s boys district championship game, the Knights led 18-13 after the first eight minutes of action. Valliant took the second stanza 10-7 to send the teams to their respective locker room at halftime with Henryetta clinging to a narrow 25-23 advantage.

A 13-9 advantage in the third quarter put the host Bulldogs in front by two, 36-34, heading into the final frame of regulation, where the Knights were outscored 18-8 to suffer the 54-42 defeat.

Nick Hudson led the Knights with 16, followed by Alex Hudson with 10. Ethan Palmer and Jordan Osterdock were next for Henryetta with six points each, while Phillip Rice and Skylar Greenhaw rounded out the scoring for the Knights with two points apiece.
