The Beggs varsity basketball program will have their work cut out for them over the next two weeks if they are to earn spots in the Class 3A state basketball championships this season.
In order to punch their tickets to State, the Demons and Lady Demons will need to win six straight games over the next two weeks.
The reason for the ‘must win’ situation during the remainder of the postseason for the Beggs cage squads come from losses they suffered this past Saturday at Keys High School in Parkhill.
The Lady Demons found themselves in an early hole in their Class 3A, Area III, District 5 championship game against the host Keys Lady Cougars and wound up on the losing end of a 63-42 outcome in Saturday’s opening contest, while the Demons’ journey to a second-straight state tournament appearance got a little tougher in the nightcap, as the Beggs gentlemen came up on the short end of an overtime heartbreaker, 46-42, to the host Keys Cougars.
The first obstacle for Beggs in their journey towards State will be the Star Spencer Bobcats and Lady Bobcats in a pair of Class 3A, Area III, regional tournament elimination contests Thursday at the Beggs Event Center. The girls consolation quarterfinal game will take place Thursday at 1:30 p.m., followed by the boys consolation quarterfinal contest at approximately 3 p.m.
Wins on Thursday will put Demons and Lady Demons into Friday’s consolation semifinal round in Kiefer at 1:30 and 3 p.m., respectively, while losses on Thursday will bring the Beggs cage squads’ seasons to a close.
In Saturday’s girls district title game at Keys, the Lady Demons trailed 31-9 after one and 46-16 at halftime.
The Beggs ladies came out of the final two quarters with a 26- 17 advantage, but wound up on the losing end of a 63-42 outcome.
Skylar Phillips was tops offensively for the Lady Demons on Saturday, finishing with a teambest 21 points. Other Beggs scorers against Keys were Heiress Hicks with seven, Alyssa Antwine and Jasey Pruitt four each, and Bleu Hall, Destiny Clay, and Ashiyah Lewis two apiece.
In Saturday’s boys district championship battle, the Demons led 13-7 after the first eight minutes of action. Keys took the second period by a slim 10-9 margin to send the teams to their respective locker room with Beggs still in front by five, 22-17.
The host Cougars came out of the third quarter with an 11-6 advantage to deadlock the score at 28-28 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Neither team was able to gain an advantage in the final stanza with both teams putting up 10 points in the frame to send the district title contest to a 4-minute overtime period with the score knotted at 38-38.
In the overtime period, the Demons were outscored 8-4 to wind up on the short end of a 46-42 decision.
Kyron Grayson and Caleb Parker led the way for Beggs with nine points each. Ayden Hamilton was next in the scoring column for the Demons with eight, followed by Kaden Stanton with seven, Jarren Cargill five, and Maliek Bogard four.
