Lady Dragons fall in district title game

The Dewar Lady Dragons face a tough road on their journey through the Class A postseason following Saturday’s 67-22 loss to the Ripley Lady Warriors at Ripley High School.

The Dewar Lady Dragons face a tough road on their journey through the Class A postseason following Saturday’s 67-22 loss to the Ripley Lady Warriors at Ripley High School.

The double-digit setback to Ripley came in the championship game of the Class A, Area II, District 4 tournament.

The Lady Dragons reached the district title contest following a 39-24 win over the Olive Lady Wildcats last Friday in an elimination game this past Friday in the 3-team tournament.

The loss to Ripley on Saturday means that the Dewar cage squad will need to avoid another loss at any time over the next two weeks if they are to earn a spot in the Class A state tournament for the first time since 2018.

The first obstacle for the Lady Dragons in their search for six-straight playoff wins will be the Summit Christian Lady Eagles in the consolation quarterfinals of the Class A regional tournament at Ripley High School. Summit Christian found itself in the loser’s bracket game on Thursday following a 59-36 loss to Stuart in the District 1 title contest in Stuart.

A win over Summit Christian will put the Dewar ladies in Friday’s consolation semifinals at 1:30 p.m. at Regent Prep High School in Tulsa, while a loss to the Lady Eagles will bring the Lady Dragons’ 2021- 2022 campaign to a close.

In Friday’s ‘must win’ meeting with Olive, the Dewar ladies escaped the opening frame with a narrow 7-6 advantage. The Lady Dragons took the second stanza by a 15-4 margin to go into halftime in front by 12 points, 22-10.

The Dewar cage squad came out of the final two periods with margins of 11-9 and 6-5, respectively, to walk away with the 39-24 victory and guarantee a trip to the regional tournament.

Gracie Britt led the way offensively for Dewar with a team-best 11 points. Britt was joined in double-digit scoring in the win with 10 points.

Other Lady Dragon scorers against Olive were Malory Rivas and Kinsey Maldonado with four each, Talyn Been and Sami Lee three apiece, and Ally Burney and Gracie Johnson two each.

In Saturday’s district title game, the Lady Dragons trailed 14-1 after the first eight minutes of action and 27-8 at halftime.

Ripley took the final two frames by margins of 28-7 and 19-7, respectively, to hand the Dewar ladies the 67-22 defeat.

Malory Rivas led the Lady Dragons in scoring with nine points, followed by Bre Harvell with three. Ally Burney, Melanie Burney, Maikya Carter, Gracie Britt, and Kinsey Maldonado rounded out the Dewar scoring against Ripley with two points each.
