The Morris varsity basketball program earned a split decision in their home meeting with the Eufaula Ironheads and Lady Ironheads.

The Lady Eagles began Tuesday’s conference showdown with a 55-44 victory over the visiting Lady Ironheads. The double-digit win on Tuesday gave the Morris ladies a split decision in the season series with their McIntosh County foes, as Eufaula took the first meeting by a 38-34 margin January 4 in Eufaula.

In the nightcap, the host Eagles saw a 6-point lead after three quarters disappear in the final eight minutes, suffering a 59-55 loss to the Ironheads. Morris, who is ranked 20th in Class 3A, took the first meeting by a 60-44 marin January 4 in Eufaula. The two talented cage squads also met four days later (January 8) in the finals of the Warner Eagle Cherokee Classic with the Ironheads taking the tournament crown with a 49-45 victory.

The Morris cage squads were back in action Thursday, hosting their county rivals, the Beggs Golden Demons and Lady Demons, in a game that was originally scheduled to take place January 14, but was postponed due to COVID-19 issues. The Eagles and Lady Eagles will close out their regular-season schedule with road games at Warner on Friday and Beggs on Tuesday.

In Tuesday’s girls contest in Morris, the Lady Eagles came out of the opening period with an 18-14 advantage. Eufaula took the low-scoring second quarter by a 4-3 margin to send the teams to the intermission with Morris clinging to a 3-point lead, 21-18. The Morris ladies took the final two frames by margins of 14-9 and 20-17, respectively, to walk away with the 55-44 victory.

The Lady Eagles were led by Kaleah Barnett, who finished with a game-high 17 points. The duo of Maddie Moore and Emma Duclos also reached double figures for Morris in the double-digit win with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Other Lady Eagle scorers against Eufaula were Jessica Wilson with six, Marti Yaerger three, and Emily Guynes two. In Tuesday’s boys game against Eufaula, the Eagles led 15-9 after one and 23-18 at halftime. The Morris gentlemen took the back-and-forth third quarter by an 18-17 margin to extend their lead to six, 41-35, with eight minutes left in regulation.

The visitors came out of the final stanza with a 24-14 advantage to hand the host Eagles the 59-55 setback.
