Record-Setting Victory

The Dewar Dragons continued to inch closer to a possible repeat championship with an 86-52 victory over the Seiling Wildcats last Friday night at Wildcat Stadium in Seiling.

The Dewar Dragons continued to inch closer to a possible repeat championship with an 86-52 victory over the Seiling Wildcats last Friday night at Wildcat Stadium in Seiling.

The 34-point playoff win saw the Dragons set a state record for most points scored in a single season.

The 86 points scored in last Friday’s win over Seiling in the quarterfinals of the Class B state playoffs put the Dragons’ season points total at 842 points, breaking the record of 822 points set by Frederick in 2012 and Tipton in 2017.

Dewar’s points total came in just 13 games, while Frederick and Tipton set its marks in 14 games.

The Dragons’ 86-point total last Friday also ranks fourth on the state playoff record, tied with Seiling, who defeated Allen 86-44 in a Class B first-round playoff game in 2015 (Seiling then lost to Dewar 62- 42 in the quarterfinals).

Tipton holds the state record for most points scored in a playoff game with 106, which came in Tipton’s 106- 58 win over Regent Prep in the Class B quarterfinals.

This season, Dewar has outscored opponents 842-213 in 13 games and has scored more than 80 points in three contests (83-6 over Porum in Week 6; 81-6 over Cave Springs in first round; 86-52 over Seiling in quarterfinals).

In 2012, Frederick finished 13-1 and outscored opponents 822-181 in 14 games (fell to Oklahoma Christian 55-32 in Class 2A semifinals).

In 2017, Tipton finished 13-1 and outscored opponents 822-234 in 14 games (won Class C championship).

In last year’s state championship season, the Dragons outscored opponents 775-110 in 15 games.

The record-setting quarterfinal win extends the Dragons’ current win streak to 28 games and puts the defending Class B state champion one step closer to repeating as champions.

Dewar will face the Balko-Forgan Bulls in the semifinals this Friday night at Enid High School. Balko-Forgan reached Friday’s semifinal matchup with a 58-12 win over Davenport at last Friday. The two gridiron squads met in last year’s quarterfinal round with the Dragons routing the Bulls 68-18.

Friday’s semifinal contest between Dewar and Balko-Forgan is set to get started at 7 p.m. at D. Bruce Selby Stadium in Enid.

In last Friday’s quarterfinal battle with Seiling, the Dragons needed just three plays to get the scoring started, as Nevin Corbin raced 61 yards into the end zone. The try for two was unsuccessful to give the Dewar squad the early 6-0 advantage.

The next Dragon score came on the final play of the first quarter on a 4-yard TD run by Nevin Corbin, doubling the Dewar lead to 12-0 after the first 12 minutes of action. Corbin’s second score of the contest came following Dewar converting a 4th-and-5 situation at the Seiling 40 with a 36- yard pass from Jameson Ross to Ty Whitlow.

With 10:06 remaining before halftime, the host Wildcats got on the scoreboard with a 34-yard pass from Kaden Manuel to Jaron Hunter. The try for two was unsuccessful to cut the Dewar advantage in half, 12-6.

The next Dragons score came at the 6:52 mark when Kaelem Carter rocketed down the field for a 60-yard TD run. The try for two was once again unsuccessful to give the Dewar squad its 12-point lead, 18-6.

Less than two minutes later, Seiling made it an 18-14 contest with a 17- yard TD pass from Manuel to Cody Pester. Manuel crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt to put Dewar in front by only four with 4:55 left in the first half.

Dewar closed out the first-half scoring at the 1:02 mark on a 9-yard run by Jameson Ross. Ross then found Thomas Brownfield in the back of the end zone for the conversion to go into the halftime break with a 12-point advantage, 26-14.

The second half saw both teams combine for 98 points in the final 24 minutes of action.

Carter opened the second-half point barrage with a 5-yard run at the 8:20 mark of the third quarter to extend Dewar’s lead to 32-14.

After a 45-yard pass from Manuel to Jarrett Tautfest with 6:47 left in the third and successful conversion run by Pester made it a 32-22 contest, the Dragons put the game further out of reach with back-to-back scores in a span of 37 seconds.

The first score came when Carter returned a kickoff 69 yards to paydirt with Ross crossing the goal line on the conversion try for a 40-22 margin, then Ross connected with Ty Whitlow on a 46-yard TD pass at the 5:57 mark, extending the Dewar advantage to 46-22.

A 5-yard pass from Manuel to Tautfest, plus a pass from Manuel to Pester on the conversion attempt, at 3:46 in the third made it a 46-30 contest.

Twenty-one seconds later, Ross found Brownfield on an 18-yard aerial strike for the next Dewar touchdown. Carter raced into the end zone for the conversion attempt to push the Dewar lead to 24 points, 54-30.

Seiling cut the deficit to 54-38 with an 8-yard TD pass from Manuel to Tautfest and a successful conversion pass from Manuel to Pester with 1:32 left in the third quarter.

It took the Dragons just nine seconds to respond, as Whitlow scored the next touchdown on a 48-yard run on a Jet Sweep play. Ross then completed the conversion pass to Carter to send the quarterfinal contest to the final 12 minutes of action with Dewar leading by 24 points, 62-38. A 6-yard run by Pester on the first

A 6-yard run by Pester on the first play of the fourth quarter made it a 62-44 contest, then the Dragons put the game on ice with three-straight scores in the next 7:36.

The first Dewar score came at 11:10 on a 25-yard pass from Ross to Brownfield. Brownfield then ran in the conversion attempt to extend Dewar’s lead to 70-44.

The next tally for the Dragons came at the 7:21 mark on a 9-yard pass from Ross to Brownfield and successful 2-point run by Carter pushed the Dewar margin to 78-44.

The final Dewar touchdown in the 7:36 span came on a 16-yard run by Ross with 4:20 left in regulation. Whitlow crossed the goal line on the conversion attempt, extending Dewar’s lead to 86-44. The host Wildcats attempted to

The host Wildcats attempted to overcome the huge 42-point deficit in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter, but managed just a 3-yard TD run by Yovany Duarte and conversion pass from Manuel to Tautfest at the 2:09 mark.

The Dragons ran out the remaining time off the gameclock to secure the 86-52 victory and move closer to a possible repeat championship.

Dewar finished with 766 yards of total offense in the semifinal win on 77 plays. The Dragons ran the ball 52 times for 487 yards, while completing 16 of 25 passes for 279 yards. ---
