Sights Set on Semifinals

The Beggs Golden Demon varsity football team will continue their journey towards breaking their 45-year championship drought this Friday night in front of their hometown fans.

The Beggs Golden Demon varsity football team will continue their journey towards breaking their 45-year championship drought this Friday night in front of their hometown fans.

The Demons will host the Crossings Christian Knights in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state playoffs with the winner advancing to next week’s ‘Final Four’ semifinal round and be one step closer to the 2A state championship game in two weeks at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.

The Beggs gridiron squad earned their spot in Friday’s quarterfinal contest by defeating a very talented Vian Wolverine squad by a 44-24 margin in the second round last Friday in Vian.

Crossings Christian punched their ticket to the quarterfinals following a 55-20 victory at home last Friday over the Lindsay Leopards.

Crossings Christian comes into Friday’s quarterfinal showdown with a 10-2 record, which included finishing 6-1 in 2A-2. The Knights finished in a 3-way tie for the top spot in the 2A-2 standings with Chandler and Jones and earned the district championship after finishing with more district points (82) out of the three teams.

Crossings Christian began the 2021 season August 27 with 23-8 win over Community Christian in a ‘Zero Week’ showdown at home. After a Bye Week on September 3, the Knights suffered their first loss of the season on September 10, falling to Oklahoma Christian School by a 9-0 margin.

After routing Casady 43-6 in Week 3, the Knights began district action on September 24 at Chandler. Crossings Christian fell to the host Chandler Lions by a narrow 18-16 margin to sit at 2-2 on the year.

After the loss to Chandler, the Knights did not suffer another defeat, finishing the regular season with sixstraight wins to end the postseason play with an 8-2 record.

The first win in the 6-game winning streak took place October 1 with the Knights defeating Star-Spencer in dominating fashion - 72-12.

Crossings Christian improved to 2-1 in district play on October 8 with a hard-fought 38-29 win over the Jones Longhorns on the Knights’ home field in Oklahoma City.

The Knights closed out district play with double-digit wins over the Prague Red Devils (37-22), Kellyville Ponies (42-12), Meeker Bulldogs (49- 16), and Millwood Falcons (30-16), respectively.

After capturing the district championship on the points tiebreaker,

Crossings Christian began postseason play November 12 at home against the Alva Goldbugs, who finished fourth in District 2A-1. The Knights moved on in the playoffs with a 48-22 victory over Alva, earning a second-round meeting with Lindsay, who finished as the District 2A-4 runner-up and held on to defeat Bethel 26-21 in the first round.

Crossings Christian earned the quarterfinal meeting with Beggs after ending Lindsay’s season with a 55-20 decision.

If the Demons are victorious against Crossings Christian, they will punch their ticket to their fifth-straight semifinal appearance next Friday against the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal showdown in Owasso between Rejoice Christian and Washington at a site to be determined by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.

A loss to Crossings Christian on Friday will push the Beggs gridiron squad’s state championship drought to 46 years.

Kickoff for Friday’s quarterfinal meeting between the Beggs Golden Demons and Crossings Christian Knights is set for 7 p.m. at Golden Demon Stadium in Beggs.
