Author Biography:

American cartoonist and creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip, Charles Schulz, was born Nov. 26, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minn. Growing up in St.

Growing up in St. Paul, Schulz was an only child in his Norwegian and German descent family.

Every Sunday morning, he and his father faithfully read the comic strips.

His uncle nicknamed him “Sparky” after a Barney Google comic strip with a horse named Spark Plug.

Schulz knew he wanted to be a cartoonist.

As a shy teenager, through his mother’s encouragement, he took a correspondence course from the Art Instruction School while he was a senior in high school.

He lost his mother to cancer around the time he was drafted into the Army.

After being discharged from the military service, Schulz lived with his father in an apartment. The apartment was located over his father’s barber shop.

He then went to work for the Art Instruction School, grading students’ work while he sold cartoons to the Saturday Evening Post.

The first Peanuts Strip was published on Oct. 2, 1950 in seven newspapers nationwide. “Peanuts” turned out to be one of the most read American comic strips of the 20th Century.

Schulz was married twice and had five children. He died Feb. 12, 2000 in Santa Rosa, Calif., one day before his final Sunday strip was published.

That was his 17,897th Peanuts strip.

Henryetta Library is located at 518 W. Main Street.

The library phone number is 918-652- 7377.
