The Wilson varsity basketball program kicked off its 2021-2022 campaign with a pair of home games last week.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers began their season last Thursday against their county rivals, the Schulter Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, then played host to the Mason Eagles and Lady Eagles this past Friday evening.

The Wilson squads began the season with a sweep of Schulter, defeating their county foes by double-digit decisions. The Lady Tigers took the opening contest by a 75-24 margin, while the Tigers outlasted the Bulldogs in the nightcap, completing the season-opening sweep with a 55-38 victory.

The Lady Tigers suffered their first loss of the season last Friday, falling by a 46-41 margin, while the Tigers remained unbeaten in 2021-2022 with a hard-fought 39-37 win in the nightcap.

The Wilson cage squads will return to the hardwood next Tuesday with a trip to Schulter for a rematch with the Schulter Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs. Next Tuesday’s county showdown in Schulter will get started with girls action at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys game at approximately 8 p.m.

In last Thursday’s girls game against Schulter, the host Lady Tigers came out of the opening frame with a 26-6 advantage, then outscored the Lady Bulldogs 22-8 in the second stanza for a 48-14 halftime lead.

The Wilson squad took the final two frames by a combined 27-10 margin to complete the 75-24, season-opening, win.

The host Lady Tigers had three players tally double-digit scoring in the county battle, led by Janelle Proctor with a game-high 25 points. Korra Blackbear was next for Wilson with 19 and Brooklyn Weeks 12.

Other Lady Tiger scorers in the county contest were Jayda Pinkston with seven, Mellani Blackbear six, Kailee Branson four, and Kaozong Yang two.

Schulter was led in scoring by Caidence Campbell with 14, followed by Addiemae Kanada with six. Courtney Henderson and Angel Vinyard rounded out the Lady Bulldog scoring with two points each.

In last Thursday’s boys game against Schulter, the host Tigers came out of the opening frame with a 16-7 margin, then outscored the Bulldogs 10-7 in the second period to take a 26-14 advantage into the intermission.

The scoring went back and forth in the third quarter with Wilson coming away with a narrow 14-13 margin, extending its lead to 40-27 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

The Bulldogs attempted a comeback in the final frame, but the host Tigers took the final stanza by a 15-11 margin to walk away with the 55-38 decision.

Charles Shelburn was tops in the scoring column for Wilson with a game-high 17 points. Logan Moore and Peyton Proctor also finished with double-digit scoring in the season-opening win with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

In last Friday’s girls game against Mason, the Lady Tigers trailed 18-10 after one then came out of a low-scoring second period by a 7-6 margin to go into the halftime break with a 7-point deficit, 24-17.

The Wilson ladies took over the lead 31-28, heading into the final frame, after outscoring the visiting Lady Eagles 14-4 in the third quarter.

The Lady Tigers were unable to hold onto their narrow advantage in the final stanza, being outscored 18-10 in the period to come up on the short end of a 46-41 outcome.

The duo of Korra Blackbear and Janelle Proctor led the offensive attack for Wilson with 14 points apiece. Brooklyn Weeks and Mellani Blackbear rounded out the scoring for the Lady Tigers with eight and five points, respectively.
