Knights falter against 2A champs

The Henryetta Golden Knights were held scoreless for the first time in 2021 last Friday with a 44-0 loss to the visiting Metro Christian Patriots.

The Henryetta Golden Knights were held scoreless for the first time in 2021 last Friday with a 44-0 loss to the visiting Metro Christian Patriots.

The Knights were unable to find the end zone in a game for the first time since falling to Okmulgee 26-0 in last year’s regular-season finale in Henryetta.

Last Friday’s shutout loss to the defending 2-time Class 2A state champion Patriots was the second-straight game the Knights were held off the scoreboard against the Tulsa private school, as Metro Christian took last year’s meeting in Tulsa by a 45-0 margin.

The loss also keeps the Henryetta squad winless in 2021 at 0-5, heading into this Friday’s county battle with their arch rivals, the Morris Eagles, in Morris.

Kickoff for Friday’s county showdown in Morris is set for 7 p.m.

In last Friday’s District 2A-7 meeting with Metro Christian, the visitors found the end zone three times in each of the first two quarters for a 41-0 halftime lead then added a field goal in the third period to cap off the scoring in the contest.

The first Metro Christian score came at the 8:52 mark of the first quarter on a 17-yard pass from Kirk Francis to Seth McCoy. Brayden Haveman’s successful PAT kick gave the visitors the early 7-0 advantage.

One minute and four seconds later, Dempsey Gilman scored from three yards out to extend the Patriots’ lead to 13-0, then Francis connected with Walker Holder on a 61-yard scoring strike at the 3:04 mark of the opening frame for the third Metro Christian score of the contest. Haveman toed the extra-point kick to put the visitors in front 20-0 at the end of the first 12 minutes of action.

Francis accounted for the first two Metro Christian touchdowns in the second stanza, finding Dax Dancer on a 17-yard pass at 8:06, then connected with Reid Roth on a 3-yard strike at 3:51.

William Campbell rocketed down the Metro Christian sideline for an 82-yard TD run with just 32 seconds remaining before halftime to extend the Patriots’ lead.

Haveman made good on all three PAT kicks in the second quarter to send the teams to the halftime break with the Knights trailing 41-0.

With 2:36 left in the third quarter, Haveman toed a 21-yard field goal attempt to extend Metro Christian’s advantage to 44-0.

The Knights were unable to reach the end zone in the final 14:36 of game time to suffer the 44-0 setback.
