Eagles drop 2 of 3 road games last weekend

The Morris Eagles put a little bit of mileage on their activity bus last weekend to compete in three varsity baseball games.

The Morris Eagles put a little bit of mileage on their activity bus last weekend to compete in three varsity baseball games.

The Eagles traveled a total of 361.6 miles (roundtrip) - an average of 120.5 miles per day - to battle three very tough opponents.

The Morris diamond squad came away with a 1-2 record during their 3-game road trip to sit at 5-14, heading into this past Monday’s home game against the Okmulgee Bulldogs. See today’s edition for complete details of the Eagles’ home-and-home district meeting with their Okmulgee County foes.

The Eagles began last weekend’s 3-game road trip last Thursday at Mannford (133.8 miles roundtrip), taking on the Mannford Pirates. The Morris squad overcame an early deficit to score six runs in their final two at-bats and leave Mannford with a 6-2 victory.

The Morris diamond squad found themselves back on the activity bus last Friday, traveling 140.8 miles (roundtrip) to Cushing for a showdown with the host Cushing Tigers. The Eagles dropped the meeting with Cushing by an 11-1 outcome, then traveled 87 miles (roundtrip) to Tulsa last Saturday for their battle with the Lincoln Christian Bulldogs. The Morris squad suffered their second-straight road defeat, 16-6, to the host Bulldogs.

After opening this week with their home-and-home series with Okmulgee, the Eagles will be at home this weekend, hosting their annual baseball tournament. The Morris squad was scheduled to open tournament action Thursday at 10 a.m. against the Haskell Haymakers. The home tournament is scheduled to continue Friday and Saturday at the Morris high school baseball field.

The Eagles are scheduled to open next week’s schedule with a home-and-home district series with the Victory Christian Conquerors, hosting the Tulsa school on Monday, then making the trip to Tulsa Tuesday to complete the 2-game meeting with the Conquerors.

In last Thursday’s win over Mannford, the host Pirates opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third, then added a run in their half of the fourth for a 2-0 advantage.

After a scoreless fifth, the Eagles cut the deficit in half, 2-1, with a run in the top of the sixth, then plated five runs in their half of the seventh to take over the lead at 6-2, heading into the final half-inning of regulation.

The Morris defense kept the host Pirates off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 6-2 victory.

Garrett Uva went the distance on the mound for Morris to earn the pitching win. Uva allowed two runs on nine hits, striking out five and hitting three in seven innings of work.

The top offensive performer for the Eagles against Mannford was Kolby Burgess, who went 3 for 4 with three singles and an RBI.

The duo of Kolby Adams (2 for 4, double, triple, RBI) and Keegan Burgess (2 for 4, single, double) also recorded multi-hit games for Morris with two hits each.

The final two base hits for the Eagles in the road win came on a single by Uva and a double by Junior Walls. Uva also reached base on a pair of fielder’s choices, while Walls also reached one other time in the contest after being hit by a pitch during an at-bat.

Other baserunners for Morris last Thursday were Mateo Terriquez (walk, 2 errors), Kaynen Powell (walk, error), Ty Long (walk), and Trey Daniels (walk).

In last Friday’s road game against Cushing, the host Tigers got the scoring started with four runs in the bottom of the first.

The Eagles tallied their lone run in the top of the third, cutting the deficit to three, 4-1, after three and one-half innings of action.

Cushing pushed across four runs in the bottom of the third to increase its lead to 8-1, then put the finishing touches on the run-rule decision with three runs in the home half of the fourth to hand the Eagles the 11-1 setback.

Kolby Burgess got the start on the mound for Morris and was saddled with the pitching loss. Burgess faced only three batters in the first, allowing three runs on no hits, walking one and hitting two.

Koen Burgess took over in relief in the first, giving up eight runs on five hits with five strikeouts, four walks and one hit batter in three and two-third innings of work.

The Eagles were limited to just four hits in the contest, led by Kolby Adams, who went 2 for 2 with a single and double.

The other base hits for Morris against Cushing were a single by Ty Long and an RBI single by Mateo Terriquez.

Terriquez was the only other baserunner in the contest, drawing a leadoff walk in the first inning.

In last Saturday’s road meeting with Lincoln Christian, the Eagles took an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first.

The early lead quickly disappeared, as the host Bulldogs plated eight runs in the bottom of the first for an 8-2 advantage after one inning of action.

Morris made it an 8-6 contest with four runs in the top of the second and were unable to get any closer, as Lincoln Christian plated five in the second and three in the third for a 16-6 advantage.

The Eagles were unable to push across any runs in their next three at-bats to come up on the short end of a 16-6 outcome.

Junior Walls absorbed the pitching loss for Morris, allowing 13 runs on seven hits, walking six and hitting a batter in an inning and two-thirds of work.

Jake Hopper worked the final two and one-third innings of relief, striking out one, while giving up three runs on four hits.

Kolby Adams was once again the top hitter for the Eagles last Saturday, going 2 for 3 at the plate with a double, triple, and 3 RBIs. Adams reached on a fielder’s choice in his third at-bat of the contest.

Keegan Burgess also recorded a multihit game for Morris against Lincoln Christian, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and an RBI.

The final base hit last Saturday came on an RBI single by Kolby Burgess in the second inning. Kolby Burgess also reached on an error in the contest.

Other Morris hitters to reach base in last Saturday’s road game were Mateo Terriquez (walk, hit by pitch, fielder’s choice), Micah Daniels (walk), Ty Long (walk, hit by pitch), and Trey Daniels (2 walks).
