Eagles finish sixth at Keystone Classic

The Morris Eagles came away with a sixth-place finish at the 2021 Keystone Classic last Saturday afternoon in Mannford.

The Morris Eagles came away with a sixth-place finish at the 2021 Keystone Classic last Saturday afternoon in Mannford.

The Eagles (4-8) concluded their participation at the 3-day event with a 15-8 setback to the Tulsa Edison Eagles in last Saturday’s consolation finals.

The Morris diamond squad found themselves in the loser’s side of the tournament bracket after suffering a 7-3 loss to the Chisholm Longhorns in last Thursday’s opening-round meeting in Coweta.

The Eagles rebounded from the first-round defeat by routing the Frontier Mustangs 11-1 in last Friday’s consolation semifinals in Coweta.

Morris was scheduled to battle Adair in back-to-back games to begin this week, hosting the Warriors on Monday and traveling to Adair on Tuesday. The Eagles are scheduled to host Hilldale on Thursday to complete this week’s 3-game schedule.

In last Thursday’s opening-round battle with Chisholm, the Longhorns opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first, then added two in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage.

The Eagles broke onto the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fifth, then matched Chisholm with a run in the sixth to make it a 7-2 contest.

The Morris squad was unable to overcome the 5-run deficit in their final at-bat in the top of the seventh, managing only one run in the frame to suffer the 7-3 setback.

The Eagles were limited to five hits in the opening-round loss. The five base hits for the Morris offense came on singles by Kolby Burgess, Koen Burgess, and Ty Long, an RBI single by Keegan Burgess, and an RBI double by Trey Daniels.

Other Morris baserunners in the contest were Long (walk), Kolby Adams (error), Mateo Terriquez (walk), Garrett Uva (fielder’s choice), Junior Walls (walk, hit by pitch), and Koen Burgess (error).

Terriquez went the distance on the mound for Morris to absorb the pitching loss. Terriquez allowed seven runs on nine hits, striking out five in six innings of work.

In last Friday’s consolation semifinal meeting with Frontier, the Eagles got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the top of the first.

Frontier made it a 2-1 contest with a run in the bottom of the second, while Morris broke the game wide open with four runs in the third, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth for an 11-1 advantage.

The Eagle defense kept Frontier in check in the bottom of the fifth to walk away with the run-rule victory.

Garrett Uva allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in five innings of work to earn the pitching win for the Eagles.

The top hitter for Morris against Frontier was Uva, who went 4 for 4 with four singles and 5 RBIs.

Kolby Burgess also recorded a multi-hit game for the Eagles in the contest, going 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and an RBI.

The other base hits for Morris against Frontier came on singles by Mateo Terriquez, Ty Long, and Trey Daniels, RBI singles by Keegan Burgess and Jake Hopper, a 2-run single by Kaynen Powell, and a double by Kolby Adams.

Other baserunners for the Eagles in the loser’s bracket win were Adams (2 walks), Terriquez (2 walks), Hopper (walk), Powell (2 walks), Long (hit by pitch), and Keegan Burgess (walk, 2 hit by pitches).

In Saturday’s showdown with Tulsa Edison, the Morris squad opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first.

After a scoreless second, Tulsa Edison erupted for 12 runs in the top of the third for a 12-2 advantage.

Morris made it a 12-5 contest with three runs in the last of the fourth, then Tulsa Edison answered with three runs of its own in the top of the fifth to regain its 10-run lead, 15-5, after four and one-half innings of action.

Morris was only able to tally three runs in the bottom of the fifth to come up on the short end of a 15-8 outcome.

Trey Daniels led the offensive attack for Morris, going 3 for 4 with three singles.

The trio of Mateo Terriquez (2 for 3, 2 singles), Keegan Burgess (2 for 3, 2 singles, 2 RBI), and Junior Walls (2 for 3, 2 singles, RBI) also had multi-hit games for MHS in the loss with two hits apiece.

The final four hits for Morris against Tulsa Edison came on singles by Garrett Uva, James Berry, and Ty Long and a home run by Kolby Adams. Adams’ roundtripper came on a solo blast in the fourth.

Other Morris baserunners in the fifth-place contest were Adams (walk, hit by pitch, fielder’s choice), Terriquez (hit by pitch), Uva (hit by pitch, fielder’s choice), Walls (hit by pitch), Kolby Burgess (3 hit by pitches, fielder’s choice), and Keegan Burgess (2 walks).

Kolby Burgess was saddled with the pitching loss for Morris, giving up five runs on two hits with three walks and one hit batter in two-plus innings of work.

Berry worked the next two and one-third innings in relief, allowing 10 runs on six hits, striking out four, walking four, and hitting three. Walls did not record an out in his relief appearance, facing three batters in the fifth, walking two and hitting one.

Koen Burgess struck out three and allowed two hits in working the final inning and two-thirds of relief.
