State Dreams End

The Henryetta Golden Knights had their dreams of a state basketball tournament appearance end this past Friday afternoon with a 70-58 loss to the Westville Yellowjackets.

The Henryetta Golden Knights had their dreams of a state basketball tournament appearance end this past Friday afternoon with a 70-58 loss to the Westville Yellowjackets.

The season-ending setback came in the consolation semifinals of the Class 3A, Area II, regional tournament at Adair High School.

The Knights kept their season alive last Thursday afternoon with a hard-fought 58-51 victory over the Dewey Bulldoggers in the consolation quarterfinals of the regional tournament at the Henryetta Event Center.

In last Thursday’s battle with Dewey, the Knights doubled up on the Bulldoggers 14-7 in the opening frame, then edged their foes 18-15 in a back-and-forth second period to take a 32-22 lead into the halftime break.

The Henryetta squad extended its lead to 43-30, heading into the final quarter after outscoring Dewey 11-8 in the third stanza.

Dewey tallied 19 points in the final eight minutes of regulation in an attempt to erase the double-digit advantage for the Henryetta gentlemen. The Knights thwarted the Bulldoggers’ comeback attempt by putting up 15 points in the frame to walk away with the 58-51 decision.

Jordan Short was the top scorer for the Knights in the contest, finishing with a team-high 19 points. Alex Hudson was next for Henryetta with 12, followed by Nick Hudson and Ethan Palmer with 11 each.

Phillip Rice rounded out the HHS scoring with five points.

In last Friday’s showdown with Westville, the Knights came out of a high-scoring first period with a 20-15 advantage. Westville took the second stanza 20-9 to send the teams to their respective locker rooms with the Henryetta squad trailing by six, 35-29, at the intermission.

The Knights were unable to overcome the halftime deficit, being outscored 15-12 and 20-16, respectively, in the final two quarters to come up on the short end of a 70-58 outcome.

Jordan Short once again led the Knights in scoring with a teambest 19 points. Alex Hudson and Ethan Palmer also reached double digits against Westville with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Nick Hudson was next in the scoring column for Henryetta with seven, followed by Trevor King with seven, Phillip Rice and Riley Pixler three each, and Hunter Gobin one.
