The setbacks took place in the championship games of the Class 3A, Area II, district tournament against the host Valliant Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Knights struggled offensively in the first three quarters of Tuesday’s playoff opener, falling by a 69-26 decision to the 11th-ranked Lady Bulldogs in the opening contest, while the Knights were unable to fully overcome a double-digit halftime lead, ending up on the losing end of a 66-43 outcome to the 20th-ranked Bulldogs in the nightcap.

The Henryetta squads were back in action Thursday afternoon, competing in the consolation quarterfinals of the Class 3A, Area II, regional tournament at the Henryetta Event Center. The Lady Knights were scheduled to battle Newkirk at 1 p.m. Thursday in an elimination contest, while the Knights were matched up against Dewey in their ‘must win’ game Thursday at 3 p.m.

Wins on Thursday will put the HHS cagers into Friday’s consolation semifinal round at Adair High School at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively. Losses on Thursday will bring the 2020-21 seasons to a close for the Knights and Lady Knights.

In Tuesday’s girls district title game, the Lady Knights were outscored 24-4 in the opening period and 24-6 in the second stanza to trail 48-10 at the halftime break.

Valliant came out of the third quarter with a 16-4 advantage to push the Henryetta deficit to 64-14 with eight minutes remaining in the district title contest.

The Lady Knights found their offense in the final frame, outscoring the host Lady Bulldogs 12-5, but wound up on the short end of a 69-26 outcome.

The top scorers for Henryetta in the contest were Lavenda Billy and McKayla Greenhaw, each finishing with eight points. Aliyah Harjochee was next in the scoring column for the Lady Knights with five points, followed by Katie Williamson with three and Kassidy Lee two.

In the boys district championship, the Knights trailed 15-6 after the first eight minutes of action. The Henryetta gentlemen tallied 11 points in the second stanza only to see the host Bulldogs counter with 15 points for a 30-17 advantage for Valliant at the intermission.

A 19-12 advantage for the Knights in the third period cut the deficit to single digits, 42-36, heading into the final frame of regulation.

The Henryetta squad was unable to complete the second-half comeback, as the Knights were outscored 24-7 in the final stanza to suffer the 66-43 defeat.

Nick Hudson had the hot hand offensively for Henryetta in the contest, finishing with a team-best 17 points. Alex Hudson was next for the Knights with 14 points, while Ethan Palmer knocked down a pair of 3-point baskets during the second-half comeback attempt to finish with six points for Henryetta.

The trio of Phillip Rice, Jordan Short, and Riley Pixler rounded out the HHS scoring with two points apiece.
