Dewar sweeps Class A districts

The Dewar Dragons captured the Class A district championship this past Saturday with a convincing 64-39 victory over the host Afton Eagles.

The Dewar Dragons captured the Class A district championship this past Saturday with a convincing 64-39 victory over the host Afton Eagles.

The Dewar cagers reached the title game with a 52-32 thumping of the Quapaw Wildcats in last Friday’s ‘must win’ contest of the 3-team district tournament.

In both contests last weekend, the Dragons took the lead for good following a 3-point basket by junior sharpshooter Thomas Brownfield in the opening period. In both instances, Brownfield’s long-range shot came with Dewar trailing by two.

Against Quapaw, Brownfield’s goahead 3-point basket came at the buzzer, giving the Dragons a 12-10 advantage after one quarter of action.

Against Afton, Brownfield drilled the go-ahead long-range basket at the 3:10 mark of the opening frame to give Dewar an 11-9 advantage.

The Dewar squad is scheduled to battle Covington-Douglas Thursday at 8 p.m. in the winner’s bracket quarterfinals of the Class A regional tournament at Frontier High School.

A win Thursday will put the Dragons into Saturday’s regional title game in Yale against the winner of Garber and Davenport. A loss Thursday will drop the Dewar squad into the consolation semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. in Yale in a ‘must win’ game against the winner of Thursday’s consolation quarterfinal meeting between Yale and Summit Christian.

In last Friday’s ‘must win’ game against Quapaw, the Dragons tallied 12 points in each of the first two quarters. After Brownfield put the Dewar squad in front for good with his buzzer-beating 3-point basket in the first period, the Dragons outscored the Wildcats 12-5 in the second stanza for a 24-15 advantage at the halftime break.

The Dewar cage squad edged Quapaw 8-5 in a low-scoring third quarter to extend their lead to 32-20 with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

A 20-12 advantage for the Dragons in the final frame put the Dewar gentlemen in the district title game with the 52-32 victory.

Brownfield and Kaelem Carter were the top scorers for the Dragons against Quapaw, finishing with 18 points apiece in the contest. Joey Fowler was next in the scoring column for Dewar with 12, while the duo of Tryton Mack and Jadyn Maxwell rounded out the Dragon scorers with two points each.

In last Saturday’s championship game against Afton, the Dragons ended the opening period with a 15-11 margin, then doubled up the host Eagles 20-10 in the second quarter for a 35-21 advantage at the intermission.

The Dewar squad took the third stanza 13-10 to extend their lead to 48-31, heading into the final period of regulation, where the Dragons outscored Afton 16-8 to walk away with the 64-39 decision and the district championship.

Brownfield led Dewar with a teambest 26 points. Carter was next for the Dragons with 17, followed by Fowler with 16. Maxwell was the final scorer for Dewar in the title game, finishing with five points.
