Preston splits home meeting with Eufaula

The Preston cage squads battled their conference foes and came away with a split decision in the hardwood meeting.

The Lady Pirates improved to 9-7 on the year with a 62-31 victory in the opening contest. The host Pirates had their 3-game win streak snapped in the nightcap, coming up on the short end of a 58-45 outcome.

The Preston squads were back home on Thursday, hosting the Kiefer Trojans and Lady Trojans and will host their arch rivals, the Beggs Golden Demons and Lady Demons this evening. The Pirates and Lady Pirates will complete their back-to-back meetings with Beggs on Monday at Beggs, then will travel to Kiefer on Tuesday.

In Tuesday’s girls contest, the Lady Pirates edged the visitors 15-11 in the first quarter, then outscored the Lady Ironheads 10-1 in the second period for a 25-12 advantage at halftime.

The Preston ladies doubled up on Eufaula, 18-9, in the third stanza for a 43-21 margin with eight minutes remaining in regulation.

The Lady Pirates put the finishing touches on the 31-point victory by taking the final frame by a 19-10 advantage.

Adrianne Wilson led the balanced offensive attack for Preston with a game-high 17 point performance. Jadyn Roberts was next for the Lady Pirates with 10 points.

Other Preston scorers against Eufaula were Maycie Jones with seven, Mya Tiger six, Shaunassi Jordan five, Emilie Stidman and KaTory Batiste four each, Rylee Pinkston three, and Ashlynn Foster, McKenna Jones, and Pheobey Finch with two apiece.

In the boys contest Tuesday, the Pirates trailed 14-7 after one and 35-16 at halftime.

The Preston squad attempted to make a comeback in the second half, but was only able to chip off a total of six points from the 19-point deficit in the final two quarters to suffer the 58-45 defeat.

The second-half comeback attempt saw the Pirates take the third period by a 15-11 margin and edge the Ironheads 14-12 in the final frame.

Jervais Goree led Preston in scoring with 18, followed by Kareffren Bagby with 12. Markhi Johnson just missed double figures with nine, while Keyton Smith rounded out the Pirate scoring with six points.
