“Flip the Switch” by Mary Morris
Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them. (John 12:35-36)
What is the first thing most of us do when we enter a dark room? Look for the light switch. Why? Because we can’t see what lies before us that could trip us up and cause us harm.
Jesus was how God was going to save His creation. He was the one-time-only, completely perfect sacrifice whose blood would entirely wash away all sin. Animals, which are also God’s creation, served for a time, but just weren’t quite up to snuff. Because they were animals, people just didn’t have the kind of connection needed in order for that sacrifice to have the deep meaning God had intended. We could kill animals with very little compunction. A person, however, was something totally different.
So we see today that Jesus refers to Himself as the light. In our lifetime, our walk, we must stay by His side to stave off the darkness and evil of the world. It isn’t He that wanders away from us. That would be us taking the detours away from Him. Do you recall times in your past when things were bleak? What were you doing? And be honest with yourself. Were you holding tightly to Jesus’ hand, or had you let go for a time?
Jesus says that if we stay with the light while we live, our light will never go out and we will become the light. So what’s wrong with that? Nothing! Let’s flip that switch for ourselves and watch the changes that come over us!

St. Michael Catholic Church
15th Sunday (A)
God is continually calling us to a better life. Through his word in the Bible, we can read and meditate every time. Jesus compared the word of God to a seed which a man plants in the ground. For the seed to grow it needs to be planted in good soil, with water and fertilizer.
When we see the straight rows of crops growing tall and healthy at this time of year, we know that farmers plant very carefully to guarantee the highest yield. But that is not the way the farmer in today’s parable plants. This farmer takes a big risk, it seems. Throwing seed around indiscriminately, some of it falls on the rocks, some on the road, some in the brambles, and, inevitably, some falls on good cultivated soil…
This is how God sows his words. Like the seeds, the Word of God is to be scattered indiscriminately over the whole earth, without regard to where the good soil is that can receive and nurture it. Even though the Word of God does not take root everywhere. The Prophet Isaiah tells us, “It shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” St. Paul reminds us that the whole world will, “share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.”
The seed of God’s word has to germinate in our hearts by means of meditating, welcoming it, applying it to our lives. We need the “Sun” of God’s love and grace, and that “Sun” is always shining. With this kind
of germination in the soil of our hearts, there is bound to be a bountiful harvest of holiness in us, our families, and our communities. Let the word of God, like seeds, germinate in our lives. Sunday: Religious Classes for Children: 10 a.m. The Eucharistic Celebration: 11 a.m. Welcome you all to St. Michael Catholic Church. Cornerstone Foursquare A Place for Everyone Cornerstone Foursquare exists to bring hope to find and follow Jesus. CF is made up of people who choose to love, accept and forgive one another.
