Sunday, May 10 – Happy Mother’s Day to all the lovely ladies out there. May your day be as awesome for you as possible in these different times.

American author of children’s books, L. Frank Baum was born May 15, 1856 in Chittenango, New York.

The seventh of nine children all tutored at home, Baum began writing when he was quite young.

He loved the theater and wrote poetry and plays but this was short lived.

Baum met and married Maud Gage and they had four sons.

He tried his hand at running a toy store, starting a local newspaper and selling china, all with no success.

Finally, he decided to write down the fantasy stories he told his kids at bedtime and his first book Mother Goose in Prose was published in 1897.

The author’s name is not nearly as well-known as his work, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900 and then in 1939 as Hollywood-based The Wizard of Oz film.

Baum wrote 14 books in the Oz Series with Dorothy, Toto, The Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow being loved by all generations of people.

Besides the Oz book series, Baum wrote 41 other novels, 42 scripts; 83 short stories and over 200 poems.

Baum died May 6, 1919 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Henryetta Public Library has his

Henryetta Public Library has his (Classic) The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; and his (JF) The Wizard of Oz; The Land of Oz; The Road to Oz; The Emerald City of Oz and The Tin Woodman of Oz.
