The Class A and B district tournaments are set to begin on Friday, Feb. 14 with Schulter High School, Dewar High School and Wilson High School sending their teams to compete in the first round. Building up their record throughout the season, the Tigers, Dragons and Bulldogs have been preparing for this moment.
In Class A, the Dewar Lady Dragons are scheduled to travel to Glencoe to go up against the South Coffeyville Lady Lions Friday at 6:30 p.m. With only two seniors, the Lady Dragons have claimed a few big win streaks at the start of the 2019 season. Their highest streak lasted for four games and helped establish a 10-10 record. The Lady Lions have had a successful season and will prove to be a tough foe for the Lady Dragons. South Coffeyville has built up a 17-5 overall record and will be coming off a five-game win streak. They have earned recent wins over Class 2A Afton (32-25), Class B Wynona (69-3), Class A Prue (59-56), Dove Science Academy (71-9) and Mingo Valley (83-35). The Lady Dragons will have to rally behind their senior players Noelani Corbin and Skyler Randall in order to combat the Lady Lions’ shooting strength.
The Dragons are also scheduled to face the South Coffeyville Lions Friday at 8 p.m. in Glencoe. All season the Dragons have fought to obtain a positive season record and are currently 12-8. Three consistent winning streaks show the Dragons have the drive to contend with the Lions, who are 5-15. Dewar has earned back-to-back wins over Class A Weleetka (55-52) and Class B New Lima (59-56). The Lions have had a more turbulent season and have acquired a negative record and will be coming off a loss to Class A Prue (63-24). Dewar has already shown that they have the power to overpower teams such as South Coffeyville, depending on the 2-point shot of sophomore Thomas Brownfield and senior Joey Fowler. They also have junior Baylor Selby to protect the post and make layups.
In Class B, the Wilson Lady Tigers will begin the district tournament in McCurtain against a familiar opponent, the Graham-Dustin Lady Chieftains at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Tigers have met them on the court three times this season and have faced tough losses each contest. Currently, Wilson High School’s varsity girls’ team has a 2-14 record. Both of their wins this season were smackdowns of county neighbor the Schulter Lady Bulldogs. They marked the first win of the season for the Lady Tigers, who won in a 51-33 battle, and they would defeat them once again 59-11.
The Lady Chieftains have faced similar troubles and have earned a 9-12 season record; however, they will be coming off a 58-29 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Wilson has two strong shooters, but overall struggles with consistency. Wilson Lady Tigers Samariah Husman and Britney Hartley have kept their team on the scoreboard. However, with mostly young players, Wilson has fought with maintaining momentum.
The Wilson Tigers are scheduled to face the host team, McCurtain, Friday at 8 p.m. Wilson had a strong start to the season with consecutive victories over Class B Schulter (89-18) and Class B Mason (61-37). They were able to create small winning streaks, including an overtime win over the Class 3A Henryetta Knights (63-61) during the Okmulgee County Tournament. Despite their strong start, the Tigers have recently fallen into a losing streak. They’ve faced tough teams that have put their record at 9-13.
The McCurtain Bulldogs have barely managed to stay positive this season with a 13-11 season record. They’ve failed to maintain their energy and have fallen into small winning streaks with their longest being three games. Class 2A Gans also recently delivered a onepoint loss to the Bulldogs, 35-34, which could spiral them into another losing streak before the district tournament begins. McCurtain is scheduled to compete against Gore once again before Friday.
Also competing in the Area II Class B tournament, the Schulter Lady Bulldogs are set to travel to Paden Friday. The Lady Bulldogs will face the Hanna Dragons, an opponent that they’ve met before on the court. Struggling to rally their shooting strength, the Lady Bulldogs have obtained an 0-21 season record. The Hanna Lady Dragons have had success ful moments this season, resulting in a 10-13 record.
The Schulter Bulldogs are scheduled to battle the Hanna Dragons in round one of districts at 8 p.m. in McCurtain. Like the Lady Bulldogs, Schulter High School’s varsity boys’ team has faced their share of losses this season and have earned an 0-21 record. Hanna has delivered defeats to the Bulldogs before, including a 68-48 loss at the start of the season and a recent 64-47 loss. The Hanna Dragons currently stand at 4-17.
