Lady Dragons drop loss to Weleetka

The Dewar Lady Dragons came close to pulling out of a losing slump Tuesday against the Weleekta Outlaws, but fell short with a small scoring streak in the fourth quarter. Dewar senior Skyler Randall scored 19 points, shooting down two 2’s and five 3’s. Her 2-point game wasn’t enough to tamper with the Lady Outlaws balanced offense, leading to a six-point loss for the Lady Dragons, 42-36. Weleetka had a 12-9 season record when they stepped onto the court Tuesday and had recently fell to the No. 11 Class Crowder 54-27.

The Lady Dragons are now 10-8 for the season.

Both teams experienced a scoring slump in the first quarter. The Lady Outlaws had two dependable 3-point shooters with Aaliyah Drake and Emily Vanmeter scoring a bucket each. While Weleetka looked to the 3-point line, the Lady Dragons were locking down the path to the basket. Randall opened the quarter with two consecutive 2-pointers, putting the Lady Dragons at four points. Dewar senior Noelani Corbin helped pull the Lady Dragons ahead with a 2-pointer and a free throw, 7-6. A 2-point shot from Dewar sophomore guard Morgan Fry established a tentative 9-6 lead for the Lady Dragons.

Their tough campaign to the basket nabbed them a three-point lead, but the Lady Outlaws went on a 13-point scoring streak to tie the game in the second quarter. Corbin kickstarted a 10-point scoring streak for the Lady Dragons. She scored her second 2-pointer at the start of the period. However, Randall would take over the reigns and score a pair of 3’s and her third 2-pointer.

Despite Randall and Corbin rallying to score 10 points, the Lady Outlaws overpowered them with 3-pointers from Vanmeter and Drake. Between both Lady Outlaws they were able to score three 3’s. Fouls on Lady Outlaw Savanna Zackery assisted Weleetka in tying the game up 19-19 at the end of the half.

Keeping the momentum going in the third quarter, Randall busted out another double digit quarter for the Lady Dragons with the help of Corbin and Dewar junior Autumn Campbell. Corbin scored her third 2-pointer and Campbell busted out her first 3-pointer. Randall rallied and busted out a 2-pointer and a 3-pointer but it wasn’t enough to match the Lady Outlaws. Revving up their campaign to the bucket, the Lady Outlaws went on a 14-point scoring barrage. They sunk two 3’s and earned another four buckets in the paint. Weleetka’s second double digit scoring streak turned the 19-19 tie into a 33-29 lead.

Facing a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter, the Lady Dragons experienced their smallest scoring quarter of the game. Randall was able to shoot down her fifth 2-pointer of the night at the start of the quarter, but couldn’t make it to the basket again. Dewar sophomore post Gracie Britt busted out a 2-pointer when the Lady Outlaws sent her to the free-throw line. Completing three of four free throw shots, Britt was able to bring in five points for the Lady Dragons.

The Lady Outlaws overpowered the Lady Dragons’ seven-point scoring streak by two points. Fouls played a big part in the Lady Outlaws maintaining their lead. They earned seven additional points from the free-throw line. Earning a 2-pointer, the Lady Outlaws sealed their victory with a nine-point scoring streak.

Dewar had failed to find the offensive strength needed to turn the tie in their favor during the second half, which resulted in a tough 42-36 loss.

The Lady Dragons are scheduled to host the New Lima Lady Falcons tonight at 6:30 p.m. New Lima is currently ranked No. 15 in Class B and has an 18-6 season record. They also are coming off a 73-21 victory over Class A Moss.
