Lady Dragons stung in 52-15 defeat

The Dewar Lady Dragons suffered single digit scoring slumps throughout Thursday’s matchup with the Strother Lady Yellowjackets. After falling to Crowder, the Lady Dragons entered a two-game losing slump with a 52-15 loss to Strother. The Lady Yellowjackets are currently ranked 6th in Class A and are undefeated with a 19-0 record. Dewar sophomore Talyn Been was the top scorer for the Lady Dragons, earning a total of six points, including two 3’s. Maikya Carter, who is also a Dewar sophomore, was close behind with four points.

Strother had the numbers behind them to secure their double digit victory over the Lady Dragons, who are now 10-7. Their top scorers were Tavf Harjo and Katy Stafford. Both Lady Yellowjackets barely surpassed Been with eight points.

Strother turned to their numbers to overpower the Lady Dragons in the first quarter. Dewar junior Autumn Campbell broke through the Lady Yellowjackets’ defense to score a 2-pointer. She would be the only Lady Dragon to make it past the Lady Yellowjackets to score a bucket. Dewar sophomore Gracie Britt was sent to the freethrow line and added another point to the scoreboard for the Lady Dragons. However, Dewar struggled to score again with Strother locking down their efforts. The Lady Yellowjackets relied heavily on Harjo to establish their lead. Earning an eight-point scoring streak, Harjo kickstarted the 19-point boost that secured the Lady Yellowjackets a 19-3 lead over the Lady Dragons.

Dewar fell further into a scoring slump in the second quarter. Lady Dragon sophomore Morgan Fry earned one of two free throw shots and brought the Lady Dragons to four points. Failing to make it to the basket again, the Lady Dragons saw the Lady Yellowjackets extend their lead with a 12-point scoring streak. Strother balanced their efforts between the 3-point line and getting their players to the basket. Scoring a pair of 3’s and two buckets, the Lady Yellowjackets extended their advantage over the Lady Dragons to 31-3.

Facing a 28-point deficit at the end of the first half, the Lady Dragons managed to shutdown the Lady Yellowjackets’ offense. In the third quarter, the Lady Yellowjackets went from back-to-back double digit scoring streaks to a six-point scoring rut, earning one bucket and a 3-pointer. After facing offensive troubles in the first half, the Lady Dragons rallied behind Been. She scored a pair of 3’s and kickstarted a seven-point scoring streak. Dewar freshman Maliegha Spears helped from the free-throw line and scored one of two shots. Though they didn’t break into the double digits, the Lady Dragons managed to overpower the Lady Yellowjackets and cut into their lead somewhat, 36-11.

The Lady Dragons returned to their offensive rut in the fourth quarter, while the Lady Yellowjackets regained their momentum. Carter was the only Lady Dragon to make it to the basket and scored a pair of 2’s. Adding four points to the scoreboard wasn’t enough to match the Lady Yellowjacket’s 16-point boost. KK Harjo and Katy Stafford led the double digit scoring barrage and sank a total of five 2’s. With their offense on shaky ground, the Lady Dragons suffered a 52-15 loss and saw their record fall to 10-7.
