Dewar balances record with win over Wilson, loss to Crowder

The Lady Dragons improved their season record with a 22- point win over the Lady Tigers Monday night, 44-22. Wilson was overpowered in the first quarter due to the variety of shooters Dewar had on hand. Despite the double digit win over the Lady Tigers, the Lady Dragons struggled to match the Crowder Lady Demons and lost in a 56-32 battle.

Dewar Lady Dragon Noelani Corbin reached double digits in both games, earning a total of 39 points with most of those made in the paint.

The Lady Tigers couldn’t get their shots to fall right in the first quarter. With some of their top shooters struggling to connect to the basket, the Lady Tigers failed to hold back the Lady Dragons’ offense. Corbin scored her first pair of 2’s, kickstarting a small scoring streak. Dewar sophomore Gracie Britt and junior Hailie Cargola both shot down buckets to help garner the Lady Dragons an 8-0 lead.

Uncontested in the paint, the Lady Dragons busted out a 16- point scoring barrage in the second quarter. Britt opened the quarter with a fight under the basket, which extended the Lady Dragons’ hold on the scoreboard to 10-0. The Lady Dragons put up a fight under the basket, securing another four 2-pointers from Corbin, freshmen Maliegha Spears and Maikya Carter.

Fouls upended the Lady Dragons shutout score when Samariah Husman was sent to the free throw line for three shots. She shot down each of them to put the Lady Tigers on the scoreboard.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Dewar sophomore guard Morgan Fry sealed the Lady Dragons’ lead, 24-3.

Wilson began to find success at the 3-point line in the third quarter. Breaking through their scoring hiatus, the Lady Tigers turned to Husman to lead an eight-point scoring streak. She earned two consecutive 3-pointers and had help from Britney Hartley under the basket.

The 21-point lead the Lady Dragons built up in the first half stayed intact, however, with a nine-point scoring streak. Corbin scored her fourth 2-pointer to open the quarter and Cargola shot down another bucket. Switching her tactics, Carter found an opening for a 3-point shot, bringing the Lady Dragons to a 33-11 lead.

The Lady Dragons faced a rejuvenated Lady Tiger offense in the fourth quarter. Wilson rallied around Husman and Autumn Barnard who turned up the heat on the 3-point line. Barnard completed two 3-point shots and Husman scored her third 3-pointer. Husman also made it to the basket for a layup.

Despite the Lady Tigers reaching double figures for the first time on the court, the Lady Dragons pushed forward and scored a game-winning 11 points. Corbin scored a 2-point and a 3-point bucket. A barrage of 2-pointers from junior Autumn Campbell, sophomore Lilliana Cargola and freshman Morgan Brooks sealed the Lady Dragons 44-22 victory.

A struggle to balance their offense ensued when the Lady Dragons went up against the Crowder Lady Demons. Injuries meant the Lady Dragons had to turn to younger players on the court, but Corbin continued to uphold her team’s offense.

The Lady Demons doubled up on the Lady Dragons in the first quarter with Crowder’s Maggie Sockey and Kylie Smith busting out a 16-point scoring streak. Corbin was able to sink a bucket at the start of the quarter. She couldn’t connect with the basket again throughout the rest of the quarter. Instead, she found success at the free-throw line and completed four of four shots.

Britt ended the quarter with a 2-pointer, leaving the Lady Dragons to face a 16-8 uphill battle.

Though Corbin busted out four 2’s in the second quarter, the Lady Demons continued to place most of their shooting responsibilities on Sockey, who completed a pair of 2’s and 3’s.

With the Lady Demons adding 17 points to their lead, the Lady Dragons fell further behind at the end of the first half, 33-23. Facing a 10-point deficit, the Lady Dragons offense continued to rely solely on Corbin. She singlehandedly scored all six points the Lady Dragons posted in the third quarter.

The Lady Demons secured their third consecutive double digit quarter, pulling ahead of the Lady Dragons 48-23.

Corbin continued to maintain the momentum she had in the first half and secured a pair of 2’s. She also showed off her free throw skills and earned an additional two points. Fry also broke through a threequarter scoring hiatus and sunk a 3-pointer that brought the Lady Dragons to a total of nine points. Failing to match the Lady Demons’ shooting capabilities, the Lady Dragons faced a tough 56-32 loss.
