Fowler’s 20 points not enough to secure win for Dragons

The Dewar Dragons’ three-game winning streak was interrupted by a six-point loss to the Butner Eagles Tuesday night on the road. Despite junior Joey Fowler’s 20-point game and sophomore Thomas

The Dewar Dragons’ three-game winning streak was interrupted by a six-point loss to the Butner Eagles Tuesday night on the road. Despite junior Joey Fowler’s 20-point game and sophomore Thomas Brownfield’s 16 points, the Dragons struggled to recover from an early Eagle lead. Falling to the Eagles in a 58-52 match, the Dragons are now 5-4 for the season.

Dewar junior James Brison opened the first quarter with a two-pointer, but it was a six-point scoring streak from Brownfield that led the Dragons to a 10-point scoring streak. Brownfield sunk a three-point and a two-point shot when the Eagles sent him to the line for one shot. Completing one free throw shot, Brownfield started the game strong. Dewar sophomore Kalem Carter chimed in with a two-pointer.

Though they had strong offensive moments, the Dragons failed to match them defensively, allowing the Eagles to take a 13-10 lead.

The Dragons revved up their offense in the second quarter with a 16-point scoring streak. Fowler scored a pair of 3’s and a two-pointer, while Brownfield earned another six-points. Brison also scored his second two-pointer.

Having Fowler’s shooting power added to the mix, the Dragons still faced an Eagle lead at the end of the first half. Butner matched the Dragons’ speed in the second quarter with 16 points. The Eagles had Kobe Harrison to sink four 2’s and earn another additional point from the free throw line.

The Eagles’ three-point lead stayed in place, leaving the Dragons to contend with a 29-23 score in the third quarter. Carter, Fowler and Brison raised the stakes and busted out a 17-point quarter for the Dragons. With another double digit quarter, the Dragons slowly began to encroach on the Eagles’ small advantage. Fowler scored another pair of 3’s, including one at the start of the quarter. Brison and Carter backed him up from the two-point line.

The Eagles also experienced a tiny drop in energy, which resulted in a 12-point scoring streak, their smallest quarter yet.

After busting out 17 points, the Dragons only had a two-point deficit to overcome in the fourth quarter. Fowler was unstoppable at the three-point line, scoring two more 3’s and Brison kept up his momentum with a pair of 2’s. Dewar junior Baylor Selby broke his scoring hiatus to score a two-pointer and Brownfield earned his fourth two-pointer.

Despite a 14-point scoring streak, the Dragons failed to guard Harrison, who sunk another four 2’s in the fourth quarter. The Eagles secured their six-point win over the Dragons after going on a 17-point scoring streak.

Falling to the Eagles 58-52, the Dragons now have a 5-4 season record. The Dragons are scheduled to face the Hanna Dragons tonight in their homecoming game. Dewar’s varsity boys’ team will have their tip-off first at 6:30 p.m. with the girls’ game scheduled to take place after. Homecoming festivities are set to begin at 5:45 p.m.
