I have been giving some thought about widow-hood. Here at the retirement village – the majority of the residents are widows. I will soon have been a widow for 24 years. In a conversation recently with one of my tablemates – she has been a widow for 30-plus years! However, there is a sprinkling of couples among us. Now, I am not a betting person – but, I would bet – widows have a lot of similarities in our life’s story. We fell in love and married our “Prince Charming.” Some of us – possibly most of us – had children. We built a life together and we still miss him and even still grieve, sometimes. Losing our mates was life changing, but life goes on and so do we. Yet, we still find joy in many things. One of the joys we have here at the retirement village – is in each other. We boost each other, pray for each other and often times have a good laugh together – like one recently told by a dear one. She was driving her old blue Buick – slowly down Main Street to do a bit of window shopping. And – her old reliable Buick died, dead as a door nail – right there in the middle of Main Street and refused to start up again! A young man behind her kept blowing his horn! So – she finally got out of her old dead Buick and walked back to the young man and said, “Young man if you will go up there and start my car – I will stay back here and honk your horn.”
