The Okmulgee Bulldogs are trying to find their footing at the start of the 2019 basketball season. Tough losses and slow offensive moments have garnered the Bulldogs a 2-7 season record so far this season.
The Bulldogs entered the 2019 season going up against ranked teams Catoosa and Wewoka. Back-to-back double digit losses sparked a losing streak that the Bulldogs struggled to pull out of. The Bulldogs faced their first defeat with a 69-37 loss to Wewoka which was followed by another 75-28 loss to Catoosa. With an 0-2 record behind them, the Bulldogs slowly pieced together a competitive offense but still lacked the momentum to stop the losing streak from continuing.
Okmulgee blanked in a 40-41 loss to Hilldale before hosting their first home game of the season against Wagoner. The Wagoner Bulldogs delivered a 65-31 defeat to the Bulldogs, making their season record 0-4 when they entered the Preston Invitational Tournament.
The Bulldogs lost to Sperry in a two-point margin in the opening round of the tournament, 66-64. Darien Miles, Justin James and Daveon Asberry earned double digits against the Pirates with Miles leading the team with 15 points. James and Asberry weren’t far behind with 13 points each.
Despite earning a 0-5 record, the Bulldogs edged out the Preston JV squad for a 71-20 victory that sent them to the consolation championships. A four-point win over Summit Christian continued the Bulldogs winning streak at the Preston tournament and also named them the boys’ consolation champs.
The Bulldogs might have improved their season record to 2-5 but two more losses were on the horizon for Okmulgee. Going up against Millwood, the Bulldogs faced another big deficit loss, 77-33. Their losing slump was back in place with the Bulldogs struggling to hold the court against the Beggs Golden Demons on Dec. 20. The Bulldogs fell in a 61-51 battle which makes their season record currently 2-7.
Okmulgee is set to face No. 5 Okemah at home tonight with the girls’ tip off set for 6:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 4 in the Okmulgee County Tournament brackets and are set to play the Dewar Dragons in the touranment later this month on Tuesday, Jan 21.
