Despite having faced the Midway Chargers at the Wilson Tiger Classic, an overtime decision delivered the Dragons their second loss of the season. Dewar hosted the Midway Chargers Tuesday in their first home battle, but a tie in the fourth quarter would end in a four-point defeat for the Dragons. Several Dragons reached double digit status against the Chargers, leading to an early first half lead. The tone of the game changed in overtime with Midway’s Gerel Washington leading a last minute scoring barrage.
In the first quarter, the Dragons were unstoppable under the basket with Fowler and Brison scoring a pair of 2s. Fowler and Kaden Carter also found the three-point line. The Dragons ended the first quarter with a three-point shot, which put them ahead of the Midway Chargers 17-11. Midway’s Caden Miller kept the Chargers in the game with a trio of 2s, but it wasn’t enough to match the Dragons’ energy.
The Chargers slowly built up their speed in the second quarter, spelling trouble for the Dragons, who experienced a dip in scoring. Opening with a two-pointer, the Dragons started out under the basket, but eventually Tryton Mack found the three-point line. The Dragons still reached double digits, earning 11 points against the Chargers. However, their opponents were able make it to the basket for a total of 14 points. Washington cut into the Dragons’ lead with three 2s, which put the Chargers just three points behind the Dragons.
Dewar still had a small 28-25 lead at the start of the second half. A 15-point quarter wasn’t enough to reinstate their eight-point lead with the Chargers coming back to earn 18 points. Thomas Brownfield found his momentum in the third quarter, scoring two 3s and one two-pointer, while Baylor Selby posted up for two 2s. Though Brownfield and Selby lead the Dragons’ scoring barrage, they couldn’t stop Washington, who made it back to the basket for two 2s and a three-pointer.
The Dragons now faced a 43-43 tie with the Chargers going into the fourth quarter. Fowler tried to pull the Dragons out of the tie with a pair of baskets and a three-pointer. Selby and Duke Arnett also chimed in with a basket each, but the Chargers, once again, matched the Dragons’ shooting capabilities. Washington was sent to the foul line for five shots, all of which he completed. He also made it to the basket for a two-pointer. However, it was a small scoring spree from Daxton Davis that allowed the Chargers to send the game into overtime with a 55-55 tie.
The Dragons tried to bounce back and seal a victory, but the Chargers led a tough campaign under the basket. Fouls helped the Dragons get on the scoreboard at the start of the overtime period with Fowler, Brison and Carter scoring a total of six free throws. Fowler also completed his second three-pointer of the game. Though the Dragons posted up for nine points, Washington led his team to a victory with three 2s, putting the Chargers ahead 68-64.
The four-point loss marks the second defeat of the season for the Dragons, who now have a 2-2 record.
